\nThe
\nArchdiocese of Kampala celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Canonization of the
\nUganda Martyrs on Saturday 18th October, 2014 at Sacred Heart Cathedral –
\nLubaga. The Main Celebrant was His Excellency Michael August Blume – the
\nApostolic Nuncio to Uganda flanked by His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala,
\nHis Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Rt. Rev. Christopher Kakooza, and various
\npriests.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPope Paul V1
\ncanonized the Uganda Martyrs at St. Peter\u2019s Basilica in Rome when all the
\nBishops in the world were present in the Vatican for the Second Vatican
\nCouncilon Sunday 18th October 1964.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Uganda
\nMartyrs were Christian converts \u2013 23Anglican and 22 Catholics, who were
\nmurdered for their faith by the King of Buganda between 1885 and 1887, after
\nthey refused to offer sacrifices to traditional gods.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAfter the
\ncolorful celebration of the Canonization of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda, Pope
\nPaul V1 visited Uganda in 1969. He was the first Pope to make a pilgrimage to
\nthe shrine at Namugongo, where he laid a foundation stone for the present minor
\nBasilica at the spot where St. Charles Lwanga was killed<\/a>
\nand upon his return to Rome; he decreed that a Parish be established in honor
\nof the Holy Martyrs of Uganda.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMeanwhile,
\nthe Ecclesiastical Province of Guluon 20thOctober, 2014 celebrated
\nthe canonization of two Catechist Martyrs DaudiOkello and JildoIrwa at Paimolo
\nin a Mass that was also led by His Excellency Michael August Blume.<\/div>\n
