Cleophas Lungu, Secretary General to the Bishops Conference.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nSpeaking to<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> AMECEA Online News <\/i>from Lusaka, Fr. Lungu<br \/>\nsaid that the Church has tremendously grown since independence time as well contributed<br \/>\na lot to the development of the country especially in pastoral ministry,<br \/>\neducation and health sectors.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cThe church<br \/>\nfrom 1891 has been proclaiming the Good News so much so that there is no part<br \/>\nin Zambia which has no Catholic presence,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nAccording to<br \/>\nFr. Lungu, the conference had very few priests at independence, more or less<br \/>\n50,but over the years the number has grown to over 500 local, diocesan priests.<br \/>\n\u201cAt the time of independence we only had one or two bishop natives of Zambia;<br \/>\nnow we have a conference which we can proudly say is truly Zambian; all current<br \/>\nbishops are Zambian citizens, some religious, others diocesan,\u201d Fr. Lungu said<br \/>\nadding that \u201cWe are proud of the growth in the Church.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nFr. Lungu<br \/>\nsaid that the contribution of the Church to areas of education and health are<br \/>\nquite tremendous and a reason to celebrate and thank God. \u201cMany Zambians have<br \/>\nbeen educated up to university level because of the Church\u2019s contribution to<br \/>\neducation sector; while the Catholic Church runs some of the best medical facilities<br \/>\nin the country.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cAs Zambia<br \/>\nEpiscopal Conference we would like to extend the message of good will and<br \/>\ncongratulations to the Republic and the people of Zambia upon the attainment of<br \/>\nthis golden Jubilee,\u201d Fr. We have enjoyed 50 years of peace, and of ethnic<br \/>\nintegration, there are more than 73 tribes in the country and yet we are living<br \/>\nin relative peace and harmony.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nHe said that<br \/>\nover the years the country has witnessed transition from one government to the other,<br \/>\na sign that Zambia is growing; though not yet mature,democratically.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nFr. Lungu<br \/>\nsaid that it is important for Zambian citizens especially those charged with<br \/>\nvarious leadership responsibilities to take this momentum event to look back<br \/>\nand see where as a country they could have done better for the good of all.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cSome of the<br \/>\nareas where we may have wasted a number of years would be areas of coming up<br \/>\nwith the constitution that represents the aspirations of all Zambians.
