\nThe Bishop
\nof Lodwar Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dominic Kimengich has strongly appealed to the
\nLocal Church in the region to show true solidarity to one another by action. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSpeaking to AMECEA Online News<\/i> in Nairobi, Bishop Kimengich
\nsaid \u201cIt is not enough for people to just hear what is going on in some places
\nand remain unaffected; as much as praying for our dear brothers in hardship
\nareas is important, we need to take action to remedy\/alleviate the problem.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe are just
\nfocusing on our own development, own interests; where is the spirit of
\nbrotherhood, where is the spirit of unity and solidarity?\u201d he posed.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nKimengich whose Diocese of Lodwar has the biggest refugees camp in the country
\nsaid that currently owing to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, there are
\nmany refugees coming in from South Sudan yet the Church in the region is not
\ndoing much to help.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cOur own
\nChristians who live peacefully elsewhere and read about these unfortunate
\nsituations in the media ought to do something. We don\u2019t see much, we don\u2019t see
\npeople really trying to reach out to these people affected, even to visit
\nthem,\u201d he said adding that \u201cYet these are our fellow Catholics, our fellow
\nChristians, our fellow brothers and sisters who are caught up in such
\nunfortunate situations, and they need us. We talk about being one faith, one
\nChristian family, but where is our action; because faith without action is
\ndead,\u201d he challenged.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nKimengich said that most of the dioceses in conflict and hardship areas,
\nespecially with nomadic and pastoralists communities have been relying heavily
\non missionaries from abroad for pastoral service. He is appealing for the Dioceses
\nthat have more priests, in that spirit of sharing and solidarity to send priests
\nto such places and work as missionaries from our region.  <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cDiocese of
\nLodwar for instance is 77,000 square kilometers; we only have right now 10
\nlocal diocesan clergy from Turkana area out of 56 the total number of priests.
\nThe rest are missionaries from Overseas,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nKimengich said that his diocese has been relying on missionaries who are coming
\nfrom the countries where vocation to priesthood is dwindling. \u201cThe local Church
\nmust therefore arise and carry out its due mandate on evangelization by coming
\nup with a sort of a plan that involves all the dioceses within the country, in
\norder to respond to the shortage,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cEvangelization
\nin very much needed in to the nomadic and pastoralists communities. Many of the
\natrocities committed by these people happen simply because the Gospel has not been
\npreached to them,\u201d he said adding that \u201cI believe that somebody vested with the
\nunderstanding of the Gospel values will not take a gun and kill an innocent
\nchild, an elderly helpless person or any other person for that matter.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Bishop
\nattributed the problem of cattle rustling to the negligence of the government
\nto take action seriously. \u201cWhat you are seeing now is the outcome of the negligence
\nof the government which has been there for years. The issue of marginalization of
\nthese communities in matter of education, infrastructures, health facilities and
\nother development strategies has led the people to fight among themselves for
\ntheir survival.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe said that
\nthis must come to an end. \u201cIt is really a shame that something like this is
\nstill happening in our country. There are a lot of guns in that area; almost
\nevery family has a gun,\u201d he said adding that \u201cIt is only the government that
\ncan come out strongly and disarm these people.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nKimengich said that his diocese has always been working to promote development
\nin a small way. \u201cThe government must join us for bigger impact. They must deal
\nwith those issues that trigger conflicts in order to ensure a lasting peace in the
\nTurkana area,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n
