\nThe
\nLiturgical Commissions of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and
\nTanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) have resolved to work together to translate
\nfrom Latin to Kiswahili Language \u2018The New Edition of the Roman Altar Missal\u2019
\nwhich will be used by Swahili speaking people in the region and beyond. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn their first
\nmeeting which was coordinated by -Fr. Febian Pikiti from AMECEA Pastoral
\nDepartment and held at Paulines Publications headquarter in Nairobi on Tuesday
\n11th, November, 2014, the liturgical commissions of the two
\nconferences have decided to assign experts conversant with both Latin and
\nKiswahili Languages who have been doing the translation. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe purpose
\nof the meeting which was attended by the bishop chairmen from the two
\nConferences; Bishop Salutaris Melchior Libena (TEC) and Bishop Dominic
\nKimengich (KCCB) was to deliberate on the translated versions by the two
\nconferences and also to forge way forward. AMECEA Secretariat through its
\nPastoral Department would be incorporated in the process and they are working
\nclosely with Paulines Publications<\/i>.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nLibena, who is also the Local Ordinary of Ifakara Diocese, told AMECEA Online News<\/i> that they are
\ntranslating the present Missal, which was promulgated in March 2002 as part of
\nthe 3rd typical edition of the Roman Altar Missal. \u201cThe previous two editions
\nwere published in 1969 and 1975 respectively and the publication of a new edition
\nis always prompted by various liturgical changes that need to be incorporated
\nin the Missal, for instance new Saints introduced in the Church and others,\u201d he
\nexplained.<\/div>\n

\nBishop
\nLibena explained that the Congregation for Divine Worship prepares the typical
\nedition in Latin and send copies to every conference so that they can do translation
\nto their local languages.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\nKimengich said that the need for two conferences to collaborate and come up
\nwith a common Swahili translated Altar Missal was inevitable. \u201cKenya and
\nTanzania have Kiswahili as their official language, it wouldn\u2019t make sense if
\nwe have two different Swahili translated Missal for Kenya and Tanzania; it was
\ntherefore resolved during the 18th AMECEA Plenary Assembly in Malawi
\nthat the two conferences come together and do a common translation,\u201d he
\nexplained.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe are
\naware that there is very technical Kiswahili in Tanzania and the spoken
\nKiswahili in Kenya, which is characterized by slang; we are trying to see how
\nwe are going to harmonize that by having our experts agreeing on words that are
\ncommon for the both countries,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

\nKimengich said that during their Tuesday meeting, they came up with a work plan
\nin which they will meet again in December in Dar-es-salaam especially the
\ntranslation experts from both conferences. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cHopefully
\nin May and June 2015, the respective conferences will approve what the experts
\nwill have come out with, and hopefully again in September, 2015, we should be
\nable to have a complete draft to be sent to Rome for approval by the
\nCongregation of Divine Worship and the discipline of the Sacraments,\u201d said Bishop
\nKimengich who is also the Local Ordinary of Lodwar Diocese.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAt the same
\nmeeting, a commission of three people from each conference was formed to oversee
\nthe work of translation of various Liturgical Books to Kiswahili Language to
\nensure harmony among Swahili Speaking people.<\/div>\n
