\nBishop
\nChairman of AMECEA Pastoral Department Rt. Rev. Philip Anyolo on behalf of
\nAMECEA Bishops expressed commitment to the revival of the Council of Laity of
\nEastern Africa (COLEA). <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAddressing
\nthe participants at the opening ceremony of COLEA in Dar-es-salaam, Bishop
\nAnyolo said, \u201cAs your Shepherds, we, the Bishops of AMECEA, pledge our
\ncommitment to making formation of the lay people, a pastoral priority.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAmid calls
\nfrom the participants to come up with strategies that would strengthen family
\nlife, Bishop Anyolo who is also the ordinary of the Diocese of Homa bay Kenya said
\nthat the family is indeed the sanctuary of life. \u201cIt is in the family where
\nlife is received, nurtured and raised to its maturity. In fact, the future of
\nthe world and of the Church passes through the family, which is the fundamental
\ncell of society,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBishop
\nAnyolo challenged the participants to remember that they are on the frontiers
\nof evangelization and have the mandate to cause the Church to be present in the
\nworld. \u201cYou are the salt of the earth and
\nthe light of the world<\/i>,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe explained
\nthat Pope Benedict XVI, in Africae Munus<\/i>,
\nsays, “The laity are called to activity in the political, economic,
\ncultural and social fields. They must be equipped with a good knowledge of the
\nSocial Doctrine of the Church, which can provide them with principles for
\nacting in conformity with the Gospel” (AMI28).<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSpeaking at
\nthe same event, Rt. Rev. Telesphor Mkude, Bishop of Morogoro Tanzania, pointed
\nout that today the family is experiencing very difficult times that require
\nChurch’s compassion and understanding. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe said that
\nthe recently concluded Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Pastoral
\nChallenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization, convoked by Pope
\nFrancis came at the very right time.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe said that
\nsome of the challenges facing the family and which need to be urgently
\naddressed include widespread cohabitation which does not lead to marriage and
\nfamily; homosexuality; presumption that the marriage bond can be temporary and
\nlack of faith in the sacrament of Marriage.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe workshop
\non revival of council of the laity in Eastern Africa will be concluded on
\nSaturday 30th.  A total of 60
\nparticipants are attending the conference.<\/div>\n
