\nThe Bishop Chairman
\nof the Laity Council in the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), Rt. Rev.
\nBishop Desiderius Rwoma said that ever-increasing problem of street children is
\nbecoming a major challenge of the present society.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn his
\nmessage delivered on his behalf by Rt. Rev Method Kilaini, Auxiliary Bishop of
\nBukoba at the opening of the AMECEA Conference of the Laity on 26th November
\n2014, Bishop Rwoma said that having nobody that cares for them, deprives them the
\nopportunities for schooling and they end up in child labour. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cChild
\nlabour can also enslave them and some of the girls end up with immoral businesses,\u201d
\nhe said adding that \u201cWe could say poverty is the major problem of these all but
\nthe increasing of street children and child labour can also be ingrained in the
\nsocial – cultural and economic structures of societies.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\noutlined other challenges facing the Church and the society at large. These includes
\nover – indulgence in alcohol and drug addiction which impairs the capacity to think
\nand to manage family life; failure of parents to prepare a family budget which leads
\nchildren to end up in the worst forms of child labour and other immoral activities
\ndue to lack of education;  \u201cSometime a
\nfailure to prepare a family budget leads parents to treat their children as source
\nof income,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

\nsaid that the best way is to help our people to be aware of this situation and
\nto build a civilised society which cannot countenance things like child
\nslavery, forced child labour, child trafficking, child prostitution, child
\npornography, child soldiers and all other forms of hazardous and exploitative
\nwork by children. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe passed a
\nword of thanks to families whose Catholic women are engaging in supporting
\nstreet children, fighting against Female genital mutilation (FGM), and
\nsupporting Church Institutions like seminaries and houses of formation. \u201cA word
\nof thanks also goes to families whose catholic men under guidance of” Unum
\nOmnes” are tirelessly funding construction, renovation of Churches,
\nFathers and Sisters houses, and education of the youth in Seminaries, lay
\ninstitutions and houses of formation. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\nwas grateful for AMECEA for granting Tanzania the honour to host this very
\nimportant conference which brought Lay leaders from AMECEA countries. \u201cOn
\nbehalf of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (T.E.C.) and on behalf of the
\nCatholic Church in Tanzania, I welcome you all to our country,\u201d he said adding
\nthat \u201cPlease feel at home and enjoy the breeze of the Indian Ocean;  Karibuni sana! <\/div>\n
