A Press Statement issued by the Catholic<br \/>\nBishops Conference &#8211; ECM on World Aids Day and sent to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">AMECEA Online News<\/i>, says that \u201cThe prevalence has been declining<br \/>\nsteadily, reaching 10.6% in 2010 and estimated to be at 10.3% in 2013. The HIV\/AIDS<br \/>\nresponse in Malawi is guided by the revised HIV and AIDS policy. The HIV\/AIDS programs<br \/>\nhave grown in scale, effectiveness and impact such that positive results have<br \/>\nbeen observed.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe statement<br \/>\nindicated that the rate of new HIV infections among adults declined<br \/>\nsignificantly by more than 50% between 2001 and 2011. \u201cThe number of new<br \/>\ninfections among children 0 \u2013 14 years fell by more than 50% between 2009 and<br \/>\n2012. This is due to wider access to antiretroviral therapy and increase in<br \/>\nservices to eliminate mother to child transmission of HIV.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nDecline in<br \/>\nAIDS related deaths is also another remarkable sign of progress mentioned by<br \/>\nthe statement. \u201cSince the increase in provision of antiretroviral therapy, the<br \/>\nnumber of AIDS related deaths has been declining rapidly. The integration of<br \/>\nHIV and Tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment has also contributed to the<br \/>\ndecline of AIDS related mortality. As a result, fewer children are being<br \/>\norphaned because of AIDS,\u201d the Statement said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nIt is also a<br \/>\npositive sign that the number of people receiving antiretroviral therapy has<br \/>\nincreased; \u201cAs of 2013, 83% of eligible adults and children are receiving<br \/>\nantiretroviral therapy compared to 63% in 2010.\u201d <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nDespite the<br \/>\nprogress that Malawi has registered so far, there are still a number of<br \/>\nchallenges facing the response to the epidemic.
