{"id":612,"date":"2014-12-11T14:27:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T14:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/11\/malawi-not-yet-malawi-we-need-examining\/"},"modified":"2016-05-03T09:40:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T09:40:52","slug":"malawi-not-yet-malawi-we-need-examining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/11\/malawi-not-yet-malawi-we-need-examining\/","title":{"rendered":"MALAWI: CCJP Examines the Situation of the Country Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The<br \/>\nCatholic Commission for Justice and Peace of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi<br \/>\n(ECM) has issued a Media statement on 6th December 2014 that aims at<br \/>\naddressing various issues affecting the country today. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn its statement titled <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">\u201cNot yet the Malawi we need- \u201cExamining the<br \/>\nMalawi of today\u201d <\/b>the commission noted that the lives of most Malawians today and specifically six months after the tripartite elections is a mixed bag of joys and sorrows.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/MalawiCCJP.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/MalawiCCJP.jpg\" height=\"200\" width=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nCommission comprising of CCJP National, CCJP Chikwawa, Archdioceses of Blantyre<br \/>\nand Lilongwe, Dioceses of Zomba, Mangochi, Dedza, Mzuzu and Karonga gathered on<br \/>\n2nd, December 2014, at Msamba Pastoral Centre in Lilongwe to reflect upon the<br \/>\noperations of CCJP and the socio-economic and living context of Malawi.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cThere are<br \/>\nelements that are showing some glimmers of hope for an improved society yet at<br \/>\nthe same time there are also issues worrying many people that CCJP seeks to<br \/>\ncommunicate to various stakeholders so that correct and proactive interventions<br \/>\nare taken to ameliorate the suffering and the agonies of the people,\u201d said the<br \/>\nstatement.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nPeaceful<br \/>\nMalawians that value co-existence and contact and dialogue; the spirit of<br \/>\nresilience and a commitment to survival; an emerging critical and engaging<br \/>\ncitizenry and finally an emerging leadership that seeks to deal with issues rather<br \/>\nthan personalities are among the positive aspects that the commission singled<br \/>\nout as glimmers of hope for an improved society.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nHowever, the CCJP<br \/>\npointed out that there are major concerns overarching the socio-economic and<br \/>\npolitical dynamics of Malawi. \u201cIf not dealt with in the short, intermediate and<br \/>\nlong term perspectives, this country may be beginning another 50 years with<br \/>\nminimal prospects of positive transformation,\u201d the statement said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nCash gate<br \/>\nand its Impact on the poor is one such major concern according CCJP. \u201cThose who<br \/>\nparticipated in looting of public resources must feel responsible for this<br \/>\nworsening economic situation and the shrinking capacity of Malawi government in<br \/>\ndelivering quality and timely public services,\u201d the statement said as it<br \/>\ncautioned Malawians to be vigilant on possible contemporary cash gate<br \/>\npractices. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nAccording to<br \/>\nthe same statement the commission appealed to donor partners to seriously<br \/>\nconsider the plight of the poor who are only on the receiving end of financial<br \/>\nmalpractices of their leaders and public servants. \u201cUnder the spirit of<br \/>\nsolidarity, the poor Malawians need support and the legitimacy of this support<br \/>\ncan only be sent through government and other reliable non state actors.<br \/>\nTherefore, development partners, we implore, should not abandon Malawi during<br \/>\nits dire need.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nAccording to<br \/>\nthe statement Corruption; Massive Deforestation; Exploitation of small holder<br \/>\nfarmers and Dysfunctional Local Government structures are among other major<br \/>\nworries by the commission of which must be swiftly addressed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe issue of<br \/>\nPublic Appointments by the government is another concern of the commission; \u201cWhilst,<br \/>\nmany commentators have argued that government can be inclusive and generate an<br \/>\nintegrated leadership representational framework, CCJP think, appointments of<br \/>\nadvocates on development and human rights and faith leaders has, in Malawi<br \/>\ntended to cripple the conscious of the civil society and faith based movement<br \/>\nin Malawi. \u201cIt has also, sometimes paralyzed and confused the \u201cwatchdog\u201d role<br \/>\nof the faith based institutions as well as the NGO movement.\u201d <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nOther<br \/>\ncontentious issues that also needs to be addressed include lack of National<br \/>\nPolicy agenda; the numerous labour related strikes; poor Service Delivery; Domestic<br \/>\nViolence; Irresponsible and over exited Leadership; Limited patriotism; the Role<br \/>\nof Donors; Human Trafficking and Illegal Immigrants and Lack of Corporate<br \/>\nSocial Responsibility (CSR)<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;
