{"id":600,"date":"2014-12-19T06:49:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T06:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/19\/uganda-president-museveni-presides-over\/"},"modified":"2016-05-03T09:40:51","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T09:40:51","slug":"uganda-president-museveni-presides-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/19\/uganda-president-museveni-presides-over\/","title":{"rendered":"UGANDA: President Museveni Presides over Ground Breaking Ceremony for Re-Development of Uganda Martyrs Shrine"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/President2.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/President2.jpg\" height=\"212\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni with <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Most Rev Ciprian Kizito Lwanga (left)<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>President<br \/>\nYoweri Kaguta Museveni of the Republic of Uganda on Sunday 14th<br \/>\nDecember, 2014, presided over the grand ground-breaking ceremony for the re-development<br \/>\nof the Uganda Martyrs Shrines at Namugongo.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nAddressing the<br \/>\ncrowd that attended the ceremony, the President Museveni said that the<br \/>\ngovernment has over the years been using Church Land without paying anything;<br \/>\nhe therefore promised that the government will pay the money to the Catholic<br \/>\nChurch so that it may help in this noble project.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nArchbishop<br \/>\nof Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito-Lwanga, said that over the years, Namugongo has<br \/>\ndeteriorated in terms of sitting capacity and other utilities, like toilets and<br \/>\nplaces of accommodation due to the overwhelming numbers of pilgrims that keep<br \/>\nincreasing every year.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cThe<br \/>\nactivities surrounding the re-development are, therefore, part of the ongoing<br \/>\nimprovement process of Namugongo shrine that aimed at marking of this year Golden<br \/>\nJubilee of the canonization of the 22 Uganda Martyrs,\u201d Archbishop Lwanga said.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nHe said that<br \/>\nwith the ceremonies, they are appealing to local and international resource mobilization<br \/>\ngroups to repair the shrine which is currently leaking. They also want to<br \/>\nconstruct multiple toilet facilities for the thousands of pilgrims, reconstruct<br \/>\nthe shades around the man-made lake and to renovate the Alter sanctuary.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThey are<br \/>\nalso to construct dormitories for the many pilgrims who travel long distances<br \/>\nand sleep in the open. They want to improve upon the terrace and pathways,<br \/>\nprovide safe Uganda Martyrs\u2019 drinking water for the pilgrims and; they would<br \/>\nalso wish to construct a Uganda Martyrs\u2019 museum and grottos for each Martyr.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe Archbishop<br \/>\nalso revealed that they want to purchase a public address system and screens to<br \/>\nenable visibility and audibility for the pilgrims to properly follow what would<br \/>\nbe going on at the altar and activities elsewhere in the whole place.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThey also<br \/>\nwant to improve the security precautionary measures for all the pilgrims and<br \/>\naround whole place and; to improve upon the pastoral spiritual and health<br \/>\nservices in whole place of martyrdom.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cIn order to<br \/>\nensure a smooth process, we have been assigned two missionaries of Africa to<br \/>\nhelp the coordination of the spiritual activities aimed at achieving our dream<br \/>\nof Namugongo.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nArchbishop Lwanga<br \/>\nexpressed gratitude to the Uganda Government, particularly to President<br \/>\nMuseveni for accepting to officiate at the ground-breaking ceremony of<br \/>\nNamugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrines.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cI would<br \/>\nlike to appeal to the nation to support this effort, because Namugongo is a<br \/>\nNational Shrine of an international repute. It will benefit not only our<br \/>\npilgrims, but also the tourism sector. It will enhance the evangelization of<br \/>\nthe entire continent and the world at large. Ugandans are encouraged to<br \/>\ncontribute generously towards this noble cause through the SMS platforms and<br \/>\nthe various bank account numbers, which the steering committee will provide in<br \/>\ndetails soon,\u201d the Archbishop urged.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe project<br \/>\nis expected to cost the Catholic Church an estimated 36 billion Ugandan<br \/>\nShillings (About 13 Million USD).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nGiving a<br \/>\nbackground of the project, he said that Namugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrine was<br \/>\nstarted by the late Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga in 1967 and; a corner stone was<br \/>\nlaid in 1975 by a special papal envoy Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nNamugongo<br \/>\nlie 15 km east of Kampala city off Jinja Road. It was a place of execution of<br \/>\nall people who committed grave offence in the Kingdom of Buganda.
