The Catholic Church in Zambia in
\npartnership with other faith based organizations, which include the Council of
\nChurches in Zambia, which incorporates the Anglicans, the United Church, the
\nPresbyterian Churches and others; the Evangelical Fellowships in Zambia has
\nsuccessfully participated in the monitoring process of the just ended by-elections
\nthat declared His Excellency Edgar Lungu, a new President of Zambia.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n <\/div>\n
\nAccording to Eugene Kabilika Head
\nof Programs at Caritas Zambia, an arm of Zambia Episcopal Conference ZEC, the
\nmonitoring team managed to put together a document for monitoring the elections
\nwhere the main focus was the result management which they  called Parallel Votes Tabulation (PVT) while
\non the other focus they were to monitor incidences that were happening as well
\nas the manner in which people voted.  <\/div>\n
\n <\/div>\n
\nHe said that ZEC also
\nincorporated the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection in the process. \u201cAll
\nthese faith based organizations formed Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG),\u201d
\nhe said adding that \u201cCaritas Zambia under the governance and democracy program hosted
\nand played the secretarial role of the CCMG whereby technical issues that
\nneeded to be handled were effectively taken care of.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n <\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe training of monitors in
\ncharge of Parallel Voter Tabulation was conducted before and that CCMG managed
\nto place 703 monitors across the 150 constituencies. They were trained on how
\nto manage the data which was technical and was electronically done meaning no much
\npaper work involved,\u201d Kabilika explained adding that \u201cThe data received from
\nthe polling stations were sent directly to the CCMG Data Center, which had over
\ntwenty data clerks.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n <\/div>\n
\nHe said, \u201cour justice and peace
\ncoordinators in the eleven Catholic Dioceses in Zambia were doing what is
\ncalled long term monitoring starting from the time when the presidential candidates
\nlaunched their nominations campaigns up to the material day of the
\nby-election.\u201d <\/div>\n
\n <\/div>\n
\nHe said that the diocesan justice
\nand peace coordinators collected data on issues related with media during the
\ncampaigns period, record issues of violence that were happening, problems the political
\nparties were facing in their campaigns and any other issues that were arising
\nin relation to the by-election. \u201cOn the Election Day the only activity involved
\nwas moving from one station to the other seeing what was happening at the
\npolling stations,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n
\n <\/div>\n
\nAccording to Kabilika, all the
\ninformation gathered were sent to CCMG in order to prepare a comprehensive
\nreport which will be released later. <\/div>\n
