{"id":24084,"date":"2026-02-20T21:29:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T18:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=24084"},"modified":"2026-02-20T21:30:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T18:30:34","slug":"kenya-mission-is-the-churchs-heartbeat-kccb-general-secretary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/20\/kenya-mission-is-the-churchs-heartbeat-kccb-general-secretary\/","title":{"rendered":"KENYA: Mission is the Church\u2019s Heartbeat &#8211; KCCB General Secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Magdalene Kahiu<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Missionary work is at the core of the Church, the General Secretary of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) said, urging diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) directors and Pontifical Missionary Childhood (PMC) coordinators to remain committed to spreading the Gospel across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the four-day annual PMS Kenya Annual General Meeting, Fr. Jude James Waweru stressed that PMS exists to help the Church live out its missionary identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissionary work is the heart and the soul of the life of the Church. Missionary work is actually the Church. It is the work of the Church,\u201d Fr. Jude told the 50 participants gathered at Assumption Sisters of Nairobi JJ McCarthy Centre.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized the role of PMS, \u201cWhen we speak about the work of PMS, we are not talking about a responsibility outside ourselves. We are speaking about who we are as the Church. This mission is very sublime and very noble. Jude said, adding that every Christian is called to be a missionary.<\/p>\n<p>Fr Jude also cautioned the missionaries against competing with each other, saying it risks turning missionary work into private projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComparison is good. Benchmarking is good. Learning from one another is good, but competition is bad,\u201d Fr. Jude said, adding, \u201cWhen we compete, we lose sight of the fact that this is missionary work and that each of us has a responsibility. It will never look the same everywhere; the synergy will differ; the dynamics will differ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the Church\u2019s mission \u201cis about complementarity \u2026 and strengthening one another\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of competing, the Priest urged the missionaries to build solidarity and, in doing so, \u201cprotect the mission from becoming a private project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat must be the same is that all of us are doing our best. That is the only thing that needs to be the same: that each of us is giving our very best,\u201d Fr. Jude said.<\/p>\n<p>In her virtual presentation to the gathering, Sr. In\u00eas Paulo Albino, the Secretary General of the Pontifical Society for Missionary Childhood, highlighted that proclaiming the Gospel is not optional but a central duty of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>While citing Pope Francis\u2019 Apostolic Exhortation <em>Evangelii Gaudium<\/em> (The Joy of the Gospel), she emphasized that evangelization is the responsibility of every baptized person, and that the Church is inherently missionary, called to be \u201coutgoing\u201d rather than inward-looking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missionary mandate is lived through witness of life, proclamation of the Gospel, participation in local Church life, and concrete service to the marginalized,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormation and animation go hand in hand.
