\nOver 200
\nrefugees mainly Rwandese, Burundese and Congolese have taken shelter at St.
\nIgnatius Catholic parish in Lusaka after sporadic riots erupted on suspicions
\nthat foreign nationals are behind the ritual murders that happened around the
\nZambian capital Lusaka. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nRecently,
\nLusaka has had people being killed by suspected rituals murders slicing off
\ngenitals, ears and removing hearts from such victims which is said to be used
\nas fetishes to grow business especially by foreign nationals.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nRumours went
\nround in densely populated communities of Lusaka that the police had arrested a
\nforeign national in connection with the killings that is what sparkled violence
\nwhen the communities vented their anger on Rwandese, Burundese and Congolese
\nnationals operating grocery shops in Lusaka. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHowever, the
\npolice denied ever arresting any foreign national in relation to the killings
\nbut said they arrested one for conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPresident
\nEdgar Lungu who visited the refugees at St. Ignatius parish on Thursday, 21st April,
\nspoke of the collective shame of the nation at the recent criminal attacks on
\nsome foreign nationals in the wake of recent ritual murders.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\npresident said that he was ashamed that some of his citizens can take to such
\ncriminality to attack foreigners.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n“I take
\nfull responsibility on behalf of the Zambian people. I also assure you of full
\nprotection and security of your person and property.”<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nPresident emphasized that the senseless violence in some parts of Lusaka are
\nacts criminality rather than xenophobic.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nPresident said he will work with the UN and the Church to resolve the matter.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nUnited
\nNations Resident Coordinator Janet Rogan and UNHCR Representative Laura
\nLocaastro and the Catholic Priest Fr. Charles Chilinda, SJ, accompanied the
\nPresident.<\/div>\n
