{"id":18539,"date":"2023-11-10T15:59:15","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T15:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=18539"},"modified":"2023-11-13T10:05:42","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T10:05:42","slug":"uganda-half-truth-reporting-on-environmental-degradation-is-to-ignore-the-poors-suffering-cardinal-czerny-at-a-journalists-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2023\/11\/10\/uganda-half-truth-reporting-on-environmental-degradation-is-to-ignore-the-poors-suffering-cardinal-czerny-at-a-journalists-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"UGANDA: Half-truth Reporting on Environmental Degradation Is to Ignore the Poor\u2019s Suffering: Cardinal Czerny at a Journalists Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vatican official at the launch of Pan-African Refresher Program on integral ecology in Kampala, Uganda, has raised concern that media practitioners are not reporting adequately about environmental awareness because of being aloof from the reality happening on the ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his introductory remarks while addressing journalists, communicators, and other media professionals from Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Oman, Brazil, Germany, and Togo, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development Michael Cardinal Czerny decried, \u201cToo often, communicators do not hear the cry of the poor, because they lack direct contact with them, and not hearing the cry (means) they cannot report it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emphasizing the need for media practitioners being in close contact with the poor, the Cardinal said, \u201cHaving such contact is an important corrective to the manipulation that occurs in society. Otherwise, \u201cpolitical propaganda, the media, and the shapers of public opinion will continue to promote an individualistic and uncritical culture subservient to unregulated economic interests and societal institutions at the service of those who already enjoy too much power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The five-day seminar from 5<sup>th<\/sup>-11<sup>th<\/sup> November is themed \u201cContribution of journalists and media practitioners for an integral ecology according to Pope Francis&#8217; encyclical \u2018Laudato Si\u2019,\u201d with the aim to<em> strengthen the capacities of media professionals and propose effective approaches to solving environmental problems which are integral to the sustainable development of the African continent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sharing Pope Francis\u2019 message on how media and communication professionals can hurt society and ecology the Cardinal said, \u201cOverwhelming volume is part of the problem. We no longer dialogue with those others whom we have \u201ccategorized, one way or the other, either to be unfairly discredited or to be praised to the skies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides focusing on the Encyclical Letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html\"><em>Laudato Si\u2019<\/em><\/a> on care for our common home, the Cardinal asked conveners of the workshop who are the <strong>African Catholic Union of the Press<\/strong> <strong>(<\/strong>UCAP) in collaboration with Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) to also consider the new Apostolic Exhortation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/20231004-laudate-deum.html\"><em>Laudate Deum<\/em><\/a> on the climate crisis and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20201003_enciclica-fratelli-tutti.html\"><em>Fratelli Tutti<\/em><\/a> on fraternity and social friendship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Cardinal Czerny, media practitioners disseminate \u201cpartial realities and half-truths that ignore the injuries inflicted upon the poor and our common home,\u201d the results of which allow \u201charmful attitudes, practices, and policies to get a start and grow,\u201d while the elite and the powerful benefit from the loud voice of the media which does not speak out entire reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cardinal noted that lack of proper reporting leads to negative impacts in society including \u201cforced migration, loss of livelihood, racism, unjust imprisonment, illness, and even death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides reinforcing power structures that hurt people and nature, the Cardinal said, \u201cLoud media voices can also perpetrate the \u201ctechnocratic paradigm.\u201d This happens when media are na\u00efve and uncritical about \u201cgreenwashing\u201d (where) technologies are called \u2018ecological\u2019 to obscure the damage they cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the media does not perform its rightful duty, Cardinal Czerny narrated echoing Pope Francis\u2019 message that the media may fall into pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Apostolic Exhortation <em>Laudate Deum, <\/em>the \u201cworld sings of an infinite Love. This song of praise to God is what an integral ecology amplifies. Media can promote care for creation by echoing this song,\u201d reads part of the Cardinal\u2019s introductory message delivered on Monday, November 6, as it continues, \u201cBy \u201clearning to see and appreciate beauty, we learn to reject self-interested pragmatism.\u201d Media professionals can draw close to splendid places in the world, and to the people who live there, and share the beauty and echo their voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main role of media in society is normally to inform, educate and entertain.
