{"id":18137,"date":"2023-09-22T14:56:17","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T14:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=18137"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:27:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T15:27:45","slug":"amecea-justice-and-peace-coordinators-in-kenya-challenged-to-make-nature-a-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2023\/09\/22\/amecea-justice-and-peace-coordinators-in-kenya-challenged-to-make-nature-a-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"AMECEA: Justice and Peace Coordinators in Kenya Challenged to \u201cMake Nature a Sanctuary\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As climate change impacts the society leading humanity as well as animals to face survival challenges, coordinators for Caritas, Justice and Peace and those working as environmental officers within dioceses in Kenya have been reminded to act urgently towards making the environment a home and place of safety for all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During a two-day meeting for the environmental actors at Donum Dei Center in Kenya\u2019s capital, Nairobi, the Chairman\u00a0for the Catholic Justice and Peace\u00a0Commission\u00a0(CJPC) at the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Rt. Rev. John Oballa Owaa, acknowledged that people have neglected the call to care for the earth for a long time, and instead, degraded the environment and over-exploited natural resources hence the need to move to action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Exploitation of natural resources the Prelate of Kenya\u2019s Ngong Diocese narrated, \u201chas resulted in a planet that is polluted and hotter, increasing the suffering of God\u2019s creation, local communities left vulnerable to natural hazards such as floods, droughts, insect infestation (locusts), landslides, strong winds and lightning among others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additionally, the Bishop said, that the current ecological problems which many parts of the world, including Africa, are experiencing \u201care caused by the misuse of land and sea and their natural resources, (yet) God\u2019s intention was that human beings should respect and take good care of the environment in order that it may support life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18115\" style=\"width: 553px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18115\" src=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives.jpg 2400w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/PIHD-meeting-with-Caritas-Justice-and-Peace-Executives-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>PIHD meeting with Justice and Peace Executives from dioceses in Kenya<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With this concern, Bishop Oballa noted that the state of affairs on the environment challenges all people \u201cto an honest conversation on care for our common home\u2026to work together, think, dream and live the environment as well as make nature our sanctuary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Addressing over 35 participants who attended the workshop on Laudato<em> Si\u2019 <\/em>implementation guidelines dissemination, the CJPC chairman pointed out that the Holy Father launched <em>Laudato Si\u2019 <\/em>Action Platform which highlights seven sectors as key to the implementation of the Pope\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html\">encyclical letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe encyclical proposes a seven-year journey \u201cto bring the whole human family together to seek sustainable and integral development.\u201d This is a journey that we are all called to participate in as we join hands in the important mission of caring for our common home,\u201d the Bishops said stressing the need of \u201cworking together and being ambitious towards the common good, since it is through collective actions that we make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The seven priority areas in the encyclical include: response to the cry of the earth, response to the cry of the poor, ecological economics, adoption of simple lifestyles, ecological education, ecological spirituality and community engagement and participatory action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Prelate, the story of creation in the scripture, \u201cAnd God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good\u201d (Gen 1:31, advocates for stewardship of God\u2019s creation which is a call to care of our home as we utilize the resources wisely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He laments that eight years down the line since the publication of Laudato Si\u2019, there is no coordination between different actors who are working in response to environmental challenges<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Church needs to leverage its structures to give voice and dignity to the local communities who are affected by the cry of the earth. This can only be achieved through partnership with Government, academic institutions, civil society actors and other like-minded stakeholders,\u201d Bishop Oballa pointed out emphasizing on collaboration to environmental care.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18108\" style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18108\" src=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants.jpg 2400w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/A-section-of-Participants-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>A section of Participants<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the executive secretaries and representatives from institutions CJPD national office staff focus on Laudato<em> Si\u2019 <\/em>implementation guidelines dissemination during the workshop, the Bishop invites all to participate in the suggested action within the framework of the <em>Laudato Si\u2019 <\/em>Action Platform saying, \u201cIndividuals, families, Small Christian Communities, parishes, dioceses and all Catholic institutions, have a duty to undertake the proposed seven-year journey of integral ecology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a way forward, he underscored that \u201cOur choices on production and consumption must respond to this noble objective and take a conscious decision to start afresh and commit to responding to the cry of the earth.
