float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC04819-1.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nJustice and Peace Coordinators from AMECEA member countries have strongly condemned the increasing killings, torture and human rights violations in Burundi and called for the East African Community (EAC) and African Union (AU) to take action immediately against the crisis.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn their statement issued on 14<br \/>\nDecember 2015; at the end of their two-day consultative meeting in Nairobi,<br \/>\nKenya the coordinators stated that Governments in the region seem to have<br \/>\nturned a blind eye to the situation in Burundi as they were asking them and the<br \/>\ninternational community to immediately to intervene to stop the killings. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nThe call came after receiving<br \/>\nmedia reports that just recently alone about 87 people have been killed in<br \/>\nBurundi in the worst outbreak of political violence since an attempted coup in<br \/>\nApril, with residents describing victims shot execution-style, some with hands<br \/>\nbound behind their backs. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<b><i>Full Text of the Press Statement<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<b>Statement of AMECEA<br \/>\nJustice and Peace Executive Secretaries at the end of a 2-day Consultative<br \/>\nmeeting in Nairobi 14th December 2015<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nWe the Justice and Peace National<br \/>\nExecutive Secretaries meeting in Nairobi, to deliberate on our governance<br \/>\nprogrammes, regional justice and peace issues and also better mechanisms of<br \/>\nnetworking had the opportunity to learn from each other and also provide<br \/>\nsolidarity and encouragement for the various conferences.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nIn our deliberations, the African<br \/>\ncurse of conflict brought about by the various injustices kept finding its way<br \/>\nback into our conversations.&nbsp; These<br \/>\nconflicts are not new, but they have become more violent and escalate<br \/>\nfaster.&nbsp; The South Sudanese issue becomes<br \/>\nthe first priority for <b>Association of<br \/>\nMember Episcopal Conference in Eastern Africa &#8211; AMECEA <\/b>region and is at the<br \/>\nbosom of our hearts.&nbsp; But the pain we<br \/>\nfeel for our bleeding brothers and sisters does not stop with South Sudan.&nbsp; Not to belittle in anyway this South Sudanese<br \/>\nconflict, our hearts bleed even more when we see what is happening in our neighboring<br \/>\n<b>Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa \u2013 (<i>Association des<br \/>\nConf\u00e9rences Episcopales de l\u2019Afrique Centrale &#8211; <\/i><\/b>ACEAC) and<br \/>\nspecifically Burundi.&nbsp; It was with this<br \/>\nheart wrenching pain that we interrupted our deliberations on the AMECEA<br \/>\nregional issues to discuss Burundi.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nBurundi forms part of ACEAC,<br \/>\nwhich covers 3 countries (Burundi, Rwanda and The Democratic Republic of Congo<br \/>\n\u2013 DRC).&nbsp; ACEAC forms one of the 8<br \/>\nregional episcopal conferences under SECAM and directly neighbors AMECEA region<br \/>\nand hence the fire burning in our neighbor\u2019s house cannot be ignored.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nHistory is repeating itself right<br \/>\nin-front of us and we seem hapless and helpless.&nbsp; Politics is once again taking center stage to<br \/>\ncause death and unwarranted destruction.&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen does it stop?&nbsp; Egypt, Libya,<br \/>\nSomalia, South Sudan, <i>and and and\u2026<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nWhat shocks us and baffles us<br \/>\neven more, is that Burundi is a strong Catholic country with over 60% of the<br \/>\ncommunity being Catholics. &nbsp;So we ask<br \/>\nourselves, where is our catechism?<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nGovernments in the region seem to<br \/>\nhave turned a blind eye to the situation in Burundi and we ask ourselves, do<br \/>\nthe heads of states in the East African Community (EAC) assume that this cannot<br \/>\nhappen in any of their countries?&nbsp; How do<br \/>\nwe let negative ethnicity drive our countries?&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhat are we preparing our children and grandchildren to inherit?<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nThe international community has<br \/>\nbeen asked time and again to intervene in Burundi.&nbsp; The results have been more and more talking.<br \/>\nWe should, act and talk less.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nWe as the Justice and Peace<br \/>\nExecutive Secretaries in the AMECEA Region would like to make the following cry<br \/>\nof mercy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-align: justify; text-indent: -36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe call upon the national conferences within the regions of AMECEA and<br \/>\nACEAC to take a lead role in publicly engaging with the different political<br \/>\nleaders and governments to put pressure on them to ensure this <b><i>indifference<\/i><\/b><br \/>\nthey are showing comes to an end.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-align: justify; text-indent: -36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe are calling upon the catholic faithful in the AMECEA region and in<br \/>\nAfrica under the auspices of Symposium of Episcopal Conferences for Africa and<br \/>\nMadagascar (SECAM) to show solidarity with Burundi and <b><i>rise up<\/i><\/b> with one voice<br \/>\nagainst this violence.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; text-align: justify; text-indent: -36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe are proposing that we, as Christians and people of good faith are<br \/>\ngiven space through appointment of a special <b><i>peace<\/i><\/b> envoy to Burundi to<br \/>\nwork with the government and the so-called rebels to cease hostilities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: -36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\n4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe are asking the East African Community and the African Union to take<br \/>\nup their obligations and mandates to show ethical leadership by discussing the<br \/>\nBurundi conflict and engaging all parties involved in the conflict so as<br \/>\nto&nbsp;achieve long lasting peace in Burundi, in the region and in the continent.&nbsp; It is time we discuss <b><i>negative ethnicity<\/i><\/b> as a<br \/>\nregion and continent especially where it is used to bring about armed conflict.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-left: 54.0pt; Your people<br \/>\nare your greatest asset. text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">\nWe pray that with this cry, our<br \/>\ncatholic faithful will live their Christian life and act against this violence<br \/>\nthat is killing our children.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;
