{"id":14359,"date":"2022-05-27T16:05:03","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T16:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=14359"},"modified":"2022-05-27T16:05:03","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T16:05:03","slug":"kenya-on-africa-unity-day-africans-urged-to-strengthen-food-security-improve-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2022\/05\/27\/kenya-on-africa-unity-day-africans-urged-to-strengthen-food-security-improve-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"KENYA: On Africa Unity Day, Africans Urged to Strengthen Food Security, Improve Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the continent commemorates the 59<sup>th<\/sup> African Unity Day also known as Africa Day, the UN Secretary-General has advised Africans and people of good will across the globe, to help strengthen food security in the continent and improve nutrition so that everyone may benefit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The annual event of Africa Unity Day marks the foundation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOn this year\u2019s Africa Unity Day, the world must join together in solidarity with all Africans to strengthen food security, and put nutrition within reach of every person,\u201d the UN Secretary-General Mr. Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said in a message <a href=\"https:\/\/egypt.un.org\/en\/183242-secretary-generals-message-africa-day-25-may-2022\">published<\/a> on Africa Day Wednesday, May 25, basing his idea on the 2022 theme which focuses on the importance of addressing malnutrition and food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ninth UN Secretary-General Mr. Guterres appreciated Africa as a home of hope to the people stressing that on Africa Day, \u201cWe celebrate the enormous promise and potential of this diverse and dynamic continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe prospects on the horizon are bright, from Africa\u2019s growing and vibrant youth population, to initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area, the Decade of Women\u2019s Financial and Economic Inclusion, and the African Union\u2019s bold vision for the future, Agenda 2063,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though Africans have the capability to work towards the realization of food security and nutrition Mr. Guterres said, there are \u201cmultiple challenges preventing Africa from reaching its full potential including the COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating impact on African economies, climate change, unresolved conflicts, and a severe food crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He continued, \u201cTo compound all this, the war in Ukraine is creating a perfect storm for developing countries, especially in Africa.
