{"id":14027,"date":"2022-04-01T15:44:50","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T15:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=14027"},"modified":"2022-04-01T15:44:50","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T15:44:50","slug":"kenya-mission-agents-advised-to-act-now-against-human-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2022\/04\/01\/kenya-mission-agents-advised-to-act-now-against-human-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"KENYA: Mission Agents Advised to Act \u201cNow\u201d Against Human Slavery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Religious men and clerics who serve as mission agents in various Dioceses in Kenya have been asked to prioritize acting against human slavery as an urgent pastoral need in the society so that exploitation of people can stop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNow is the time for action against slavery,\u201d Br. Julius Awino the Secretary General of Religious Superiors&#8217; Conference of Kenya (RSCK) emphasized during a one day workshop on human trafficking at Rosa Mystica Spiritual Centre, Nairobi, adding that the success of stopping human exploitation \u201cmust involve everyone in the spirit of synodality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his opening remarks on Thursday, March 24, Br. Julius a member of the congregation of Bothers of St. Joseph borrowed Pope Francis\u2019 message on the intent of the Catholic Church on human trafficking saying, \u201cThe Catholic Church intends to intervene in every phase of trafficking human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Catholic Church wants to protect them from deception, solicitation; she wants to find them and free them when they are transported and reduced to slavery; she wants to assist them once they are freed,\u201d Br. Julius added Pope Francis message on the Church\u2019s commitment to fight against human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to over 30 clerics and Religious men, Br. Julius note that human trafficking is a crime \u201chappening in our local communities\u201d whose root causes are \u201cEthical, economic, environmental and political in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He emphasized that the mission of RSCK that has membership of 75 Religious institutions, is to \u201csensitize mission agents to have some know- how on how to deal with cases of human trafficking,\u201d so the agents can \u201cdisseminate the same information to reach as many people as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On his part during the opening remarks, Fr.\u00a0Paul\u00a0Mung\u2019athia\u00a0Igweta the Coordinator for Promoting Integral Human Development (PIHD)\u00a0at Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) emphasized that human trafficking is \u201ca sensitive pastoral concern of the Church in Eastern Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He disclosed that the Holy Father had earlier asked Bishops to have a structure and pastoral activities for the people in refugees\u2019 camp since there are a number of refugees in various camps in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn Eastern Africa, Uganda hosts over a million refugees while Kenya host thousands of them,\u201d Fr. Igweta told the members of RSCK and continued, \u201cAs a Church we cannot keep aloof when we have so many of our brothers and sisters suffering.
