{"id":13327,"date":"2021-10-01T15:34:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T15:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=13327"},"modified":"2021-10-01T15:34:50","modified_gmt":"2021-10-01T15:34:50","slug":"kenya-need-for-good-education-for-african-child-emphasized-at-scholars-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2021\/10\/01\/kenya-need-for-good-education-for-african-child-emphasized-at-scholars-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"KENYA: Need for \u201cGood Education\u201d for African Child Emphasized at Scholar\u2019s Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a recent annual international writers\u2019 conference that brought together African scholars at the\u00a0Catholic University of Eastern Africa\u2019s (CUEA) Gaba Campus located in Kenya\u2019s Eldoret Diocese, good education for the well-being of an African children has been a key highlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEducation is an irreplaceable component in the development of a society and to a large extent should define the Church\u2019s mission in the formation of a person for the realization of the well-being of an individual and the society at large,\u201d the keynote speaker Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba underscored while addressing scholars at the Conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emphasizing on the cultural aspect needed for any good education of an African child, Bishop Muhatia the Council Chairman of CUEA said, \u201cGood education must be inspired by a culture and unless this culture is solely grounded in the heart of any given people, the quest for a responsible education system is just but a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to the theme for the 2021 writers\u2019 conference <em>Christianity and the well-being of the African child,<\/em> the Local Ordinary of Kenya\u2019s Catholic Diocese of Nakuru shared that there is need for a dynamic cultural retrieval to inspire the foundation and education of children in Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe need seasoned African values to form part of the education of children today. These values are normally expressed in people\u2019s beliefs and thinking about the community the world and God,\u2019 the keynote speaker said adding, \u201cAfrica should not accept systems of education that have cost irreparable harm to other societies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bishop Muhatia, who is the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 (KCCB) Vice Chairman acknowledged that cultures affect each other for the better or for the worse hence the \u201cneed to promote the integration of traditional African values in education system.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13301\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13301\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-1536x1020.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Bishop-Maurice-Muhatia-Makumba-of-Nakuru-Diocese-675x450.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of Nakuru Diocese<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe cannot freely talk about the well-being of children unless we are concerned about the best culture that is influencing education in the society,\u201d the Prelate said and noted that the community played a role in the growth children, in their discipline and in their protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe encounter between African culture and other cultures has left behind a trail of pseudo-cultures that make it difficult to know what is truly African in the African culture,\u201d the Bishop express referencing loss of cultural languages in various African culture saying, \u201cit is not uncommon today to meet a person in urban places who cannot speak mother-tongue yet language is one of the critical vehicles for transformation of culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at the same event Wednesday, September 22, the conference convener Fr. Dr. Jordan Nyenyembe narrated that the theme of the conference was inspired by the fact that \u201call the series of AFER (African Ecclesial Review) journals since first publication in 1958 has none reflecting on the African child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe choice of this year\u2019s theme is to promote the pastoral and evangelization mission of the Church through promoting the well-being of African child,\u201d Fr Nyenyembe who is in charge of AMECEA Gaba Publications\u2019 AFER journal shared with participants and disclosed that the theme was for 2020 conference but was postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic measures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On his part, the director of CUEA\u2019s\u00a0 Gaba Campus Fr. Nicholas Segeja a diocesan priest of Mwanza Archdiocese, Tanzania echoed the relevance of the theme saying \u201cit is timely especially from Covid-19 experience where many people faced family life crisis which made many children to suffer abuse and negligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe walking together in the way of truth which is Jesus himself leads to interpersonal relationship therefore the well- being of an African child that is life in Jesus Christ,\u201d Fr.
