{"id":13183,"date":"2021-09-10T17:25:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T17:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=13183"},"modified":"2021-09-15T05:45:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T05:45:24","slug":"13183","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2021\/09\/10\/13183\/","title":{"rendered":"AMECEA: \u00a0AMECEA Visits Ethiopia\u2019s Bishops Conference, Brainstorms on Peace Restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Representatives from the Secretariat of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), after three-day visit to the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) following the ongoing conflict in Tigray region,\u00a0 have narrated that their trip was a sign of solidarity meant to brainstorm on the best ways possible to restore peace in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to <em>AMECEA online<\/em> Thursday, September 9, the Secretary General Fr. Anthony Makunde expressed that the brainstorming session with CBCE Secretariat was to help understand \u201chow best the region can engage in the process of healing the suffering community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt was an opportunity to share how best we can collaborate and engage Member Conferences in the process of restoring peace,\u201d Fr. Makunde explained adding that \u201cthe Church has always preached the gospel of peace and that war has never been a solution to problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He appealed to people of good will and the entire AMECEA Church and beyond to continue praying for peace and to join hands with various partners offering humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced and those in refugees camps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Fr. Paul Mung\u2019athia Igweta the AMECEA Coordinator for the department of Promoting Integral Human Development (PIHD) who was in the team, \u201cthe support and physical presence in Ethiopia is key to show solidarity with the people and the Conference,\u201d especially during the prolonged war between Ethiopia\u2019s Federal Government and the Tigray regional State led by the political party of Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fr. Igweta highlighted that the situation in the horn of Africa requires dialogue and understanding from the affected parties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe conflict cannot be solved by a military solution but dialogue, that is, the two parties coming together and making a way forward for the betterment of Ethiopia,\u201d Fr. Igweta explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He appreciates the efforts already made towards peace building by the Catholic Church together with other members of Inter-Religious Conference of Ethiopia (IRCE) including among others Muslims, Orthodox and Seventh Day Adventists (SDA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fr. Igweta who visited the Conference together with AMECEA Secretariat\u2019s\u00a0 Child Safeguarding Officer Mr. George Thuku, disclosed that \u201cAMECEA stands to condemn evil in the region and promote peace among its members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a report shared by the CBCE after the AMECEA visit with His Eminence Berhaneyesus Demerew Cardinal Souraphiel, \u201c\u2026all exhaustive attempts have been made\u2026 to bring about reconciliation and peace among different parties in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the report, Cardinal Souraphiel the CBCE President underlined the role of the Catholic Church in peace building and reconciliation processes saying, \u201cThe Catholic Bishops Conference of Ethiopia issued a number of statements promoting dialogue, peace and reconciliation, calling on all the faithful and people of good will to be instruments of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13165 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-09-10-at-07.36.17-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-09-10-at-07.36.17-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-09-10-at-07.36.17-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-09-10-at-07.36.17-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-09-10-at-07.36.17.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Besides, read the report in parts, \u201cThe Church has played a significant role to mobilize humanitarian assistance, coordinating various emergency appeal projects in collaboration with its partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cardinal, a member of the Congregation of the Mission, emphasized that Ethiopia will overcome all the internal and external \u201ctemporary\u201d challenges using her shared traditional religious values that keeps the country always united.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cardinal who is also president of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Ethiopia asked AMECEA bishops \u201cto play a part in any possible form of assistance on peace building, reconciliation and post-trauma healing processes\u201d and \u201curges the Member bishops to convince their respective Heads of States to use their constructive influence to help the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Deputy Secretary General of the Secretariat Fr.
