\nPope Francis met with the bishops of Sudan and
\nSouth Sudan on Wednesday, shortly before his weekly general audience. The
\nbishops are in Rome for a meeting organized by the Vatican\u2019s Congregation for
\nthe Evangelization of Peoples.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDuring the encounter, the bishops invited the
\nHoly Father to visit South Sudan.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cHe said: I am ready. I want to. I want to. I
\nwant to. But we have to leave everything in the hands of the Lord,\u201d said
\nArchbishop Paulino Lukudu Loro, of the Archdiocese of Juba.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nArchbishop Loro told Vatican Radio\u2019s 105Live the
\n\u201cissue of peace\u201d is still a priority in both countries, especially South Sudan,
\n\u201cbecause we are at war.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSouth Sudan achieved independence from Sudan in
\n2011, after decades of a civil war which killed over two million people.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDespite initial hopes of a peaceful future after
\nindependence was achieved, a civil conflict broke out in 2013 between factions
\nin South Sudan. The new civil war has killed thousands of people and displaced
\nover one million others.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWithout peace, religion has difficulties,\u201d
\nArchbishop Loro said.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe added the Church must also address the issue
\nof vacant dioceses, as well as providing support for the local clergy.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe must discuss with our superiors in the
\nCongregation [for the Evangelization of People] about how to proceed and
\naccomplish our goals,\u201d the Archbishop said. \u201cThere are many questions from us
\non how to proceed.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Catholic Church in South Sudan has one
\narchdiocese, and six suffragan dioceses. The bishops are members of the Sudan
\nCatholic Bishops\u2019 Conference, which includes the bishops from Sudan.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nCatholics make up over a third of the population
\nin South Sudan. In Sudan, Catholics make up just over 3% of the population,
\nwhile the vast majority of the people are Muslims.<\/div>\n
