\nThe Catholic
\nBishops of Zambia have embarked on tree planting exercise in all dioceses in
\nZambia to prevent deforestation. Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) Assistant
\nNational Pastoral Coordinator Father Boniface Sakala announced this on behalf
\nof the bishops at the launch of 2015\/2016 Lusaka District tree planting
\nexercise by the Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental
\nprotection held at Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital, Thursday, 22nd January,
\n2016.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAnd the
\nBishops have said it is not the duty of the Forestry department alone to make
\nevery effort to avert the most serious effects of environmental degradation caused
\nby human carelessness.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe bishops
\nalso acknowledged that climate change is real, for its effects like poor
\nrainfall experienced in Zambia in the last two years is due excessive cutting
\nof tree.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThey have
\nsaid society must admit that in one way or the other, everyone has contributed
\nto the situation by not taking good care of the environment.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nFather
\nSakala also echoed Pope Francis\u2019 concern for environmental protection.<\/div>\n
\nAnd
\nlaunching the tree planting exercise, Lusaka District Commissioner Captain
\nDavises Mulenga appealed for care and protection of the planted trees.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201c It is a
\nwell-known fact that we are experiencing rapid disappearance of forests country
\nand if this trend is not reversed we are bound to witness reduction in food
\nproduction and the environment will be less habitable and temperatures escalate
\nand that will impact climate negatively\u201d He said.<\/div>\n
