{"id":11996,"date":"2021-03-26T17:10:20","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T17:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/?p=11996"},"modified":"2021-03-26T17:25:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T17:25:47","slug":"amecea-catholic-prelates-in-eastern-africa-disagree-with-the-united-nations-on-transgender-ideologies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communications.amecea.org\/index.php\/2021\/03\/26\/amecea-catholic-prelates-in-eastern-africa-disagree-with-the-united-nations-on-transgender-ideologies\/","title":{"rendered":"AMECEA: Catholic Prelates in Eastern Africa Disagree with the United Nations on Transgender Ideologies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sr. Jecinter Antoinette Okoth, FSSA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Catholic Bishops in two Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) countries; Kenya and Ethiopia are \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d with the report by the United Nations (UN) which gives the impression to exhibit \u201ca clear bias in favour of radical sexual and gender theories and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In two different reports, one from Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB)\u2019s Commission for Education and Religious Education (CERE) and another by Catholic Bishops Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) submitted to the UN Independent Expert on Social Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI), the Church leaders have highlighted that the UN report \u201cundermines the very foundation upon which sex-based rights and protections are established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In their submission, members of the KCCB support the protection of all fundamental human rights of all persons. However, they clarified, \u201cYour report (the UN\u2019s report) clearly aimed at, among other things, advancing radical gender theories and ideologies that seek to erase all differences between men and women and undermine the hard-earned gains for women\u00a0and children in the area of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christian.org.uk\/issue\/transsexualism\/\">Transgender ideology<\/a> claims that each person has a \u201cgender identity\u201d which is an internal sense of gender that may or may not align with their biological sex, and the \u2018real you\u2019 is what you feel it to be from the inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/Issues\/SexualOrientationGender\/Pages\/GenderTheory.aspx\">call for input<\/a> on issues concerning SOGI is to inform the Independent expert\u2019s report to be presented to the 47<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0regular\u00a0session\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/hrbodies\/hrc\/pages\/sessions.aspx\">Human Rights Council\u00a0<\/a>slated for 21 June to 9 July 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the KCCB report, even though every individual is entitled to basic human rights, adopting a \u201cgender identity policy\u201d that has over 112 different gender identities, \u201cwould create great controversy among UN Member States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf we adopt a &#8220;gender identity&#8221; policy, only gender-confused individuals can determine if some policy or action violates the law. There is no other law in the world that functions this way,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Expressing firmly their stance about the report, the Catholic bishops in Kenya said in a statement signed by the KCCB\u2019s Chairman for CERE on Sunday, March 14, noted, \u201cWe strongly oppose the Independent SOGI Expert&#8217;s attempts to undermine the\u00a0hard-won advancements of women and girls whose rights and private spaces are being violated by men who identify as women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bishops propose that \u201cInstead of trying to create special protections for people based on their internal\u00a0perceptions of themselves which can change over time, (the) existing laws and policies calling for the elimination of violence against anyone should be enforced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On their part, Catholic bishops in Ethiopia Bishops disclose that the Independent Expert on SOGI is attempting to \u201cmainstream queer theory throughout the UN system and to pressure UN Member States to do the same,\u201d with the intention to \u201cmake all States accountable to radical concept of a \u201cgender framework\u201d that would mainstream SOGI ideolo<u>g<\/u>y in all laws and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe idea that a biological male becomes a girl or woman simply by adopting stereotypical female behavior and dress is regressive and harms girls and women by reinforcing the very stereotypes that have resulted in the harassment, discrimination, and violence against girls and women,\u201d they highlighted in the report signed by CBCE\u2019s Secretary General Fr.
