\nThe Council of Presidents of Inter-Religious Council of
\nUganda (IRCU) has organized the weekend of February 12-14, 2016 to conduct
\nnational prayers for peace, unity and stability as the country prepares for the
\nGeneral Elections due February 18, 2016.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a>Sheikh Ramadhan
\nShaban Mubajje, Co-Chair IRCU and the Mufti of Uganda said that the prayers will be held by all
\nreligious faiths in Uganda at their respective places of worship.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe Muslims are expected to hold their prayer day on Friday
\nFebruary 12, while the Seventh-day Adventists on Saturday February 13 and the
\nCatholics, Anglicans, Orthodox, Pentecostals, Evangelicals and others on Sunday
\nFebruary 14, respectively,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAddressing journalists on Friday February 5
\nat the offices of the IRCU in Namirembe, a Kampala suburb; reflecting on the
\nStatus of the 2016 General elections, Sheikh Ramadhan pointed out some of the
\nchallenges that have in the past brought the would-be democratic process to
\ndisrepute. \u201cThese are such as:- inadequate internal democracy within political
\nparties, credibility of the Electoral Commission, vote buying, voter apathy,
\nintolerance and violence, militia groups, intimidation, use of abusive language
\nand ballot stuffing,\u201d he said adding that. \u201cA few weeks to the polling day,
\nthese issues remain the key concerns of many people both within and outside the
\ncountry and there is a need for urgent action.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Mufti urged all leaders from the Christian, Muslim, and
\nother communities to pray for the candidates, the voters, various groups
\nincluding women, children and the youth for a peaceful election.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe also called on all politicians not to
\nbribe voters, incite violence or hold voters to their personal desires. He
\nadvised that they need to display a high level of statesmanship so that they
\ncan be able to lead this country to prosperity. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMeanwhile,<\/i><\/b> the Vicar General of Kampala Archdiocese, Rev.
\nFr. Charles Kasibante who represented Most Rev. Charles Kizito Lwanga, the
\nArchbishop of Kampala urged believers to pray to God to provide the right
\nleaders for the country.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cAs religious leaders we are not supposed to
\nbe involved in partisan election or campaign for any individual politician
\nbecause all sides are our people and people of
\nGod. Politicians are welcomed to our churches but we call upon everyone to pray
\nthat God would provide the right leaders for the country vote,\u201d Fr. Kasibante
\nsaid. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Press Conference was also attended by the
\nSecretary General of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Msgr John Baptist Kauta
\nand the former chairperson<\/em> of the Judicial<\/em> Service
\nCommission and the head<\/em> of the Elders Forum, Justice James Ogoola.<\/em><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nJustice Ogoola called on all Ugandans to vote for a
\nleader who can lead Uganda with a steady hand and a sober head in matters of
\nInternational Relations.<\/em><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe also urged everyone to show support for the second
\nPresidential <\/em>Elections debate slated for
\nFebruary 13, 2016. The debate will focus on foreign policy, taking into account regional integration,
\nborder trade, and crime among others, one of the organizers. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe debate will also take
\ninto account how Uganda features in the inter-play of affairs between the Great
\nLakes Region and the Horn of Africa. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
