Daniel Rono, General Secretary<\/i><br \/>\n<i>&nbsp;Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The<br \/>\nCatholic Church has applauded Kenya\u2019s President Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s decision to<br \/>\nreject proposed religious societies rules 2015 that were intended to regulate<br \/>\nchurches.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nrules attracted widespread condemnation for infringing on Kenya\u2019s constitution.<br \/>\nIn a statement sent to media houses on 28th, January, 2016, President Uhuru<br \/>\nKenyatta rejected the proposals and directed that a new process driven by<br \/>\nreligious stakeholders with the participation of the government and the general<br \/>\npublic to take place.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe Religious Societies Rules published by the Attorney<br \/>\nGeneral\u2018s Office require that all religious organizations submit their<br \/>\nconstitution showing statement of their doctrine of faith. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nAny religious society in Kenya must have its constitution<br \/>\nwith programmes, ministries, charitable activities and education activities<br \/>\nundertaken by the religious society and details of persons coordinating these<br \/>\nactivities. According to the new rules, all religious societies must be<br \/>\nregistered and open to the registrar&#8217;s inspection any time.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThey also demand that all pastors in Kenya must hold a<br \/>\ntheological certificate from an accredited theological institution. The new<br \/>\nrules was set to be gazetted at the end of January, and was expected to be<br \/>\noperational after a year. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nIn an <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">interview<\/i> with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Waumini News<\/i>, Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) General<br \/>\nSecretary, Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Rono said that President Kenyatta\u2019s decision to<br \/>\nwithdraw the proposed rules was reached after a successful consultative<br \/>\ndeliberation between religious leaders and the government.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nWhile<br \/>\nacknowledging the government\u2019s concern about misuse of the freedom to worship<br \/>\nby fraudulent religious leaders who extort money from worshipers and radicalize<br \/>\nthe youth, Father Rono said religious leaders were keen to adopt<br \/>\nself-regulation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nThe<br \/>\nreligious leaders drawn from Muslim, Hindu, National Council of Churches of<br \/>\nKenya (NCCK), KCCB and evangelical Churches resolved to convene series of<br \/>\nmeetings to discuss the matter further and give way forward to the government.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\nPresident<br \/>\nKenyatta said that he expected the outcome to be a development of firm and fair<br \/>\nregulations that uphold the sacrosanct principles of religious freedom that<br \/>\nunderpin the democratic ideals as guaranteed by the Kenyan constitution.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n\u201cThe<br \/>\ngovernment remains committed to an open, transparent and accessible government<br \/>\nwhere public participation and consideration of a broad range of views is<br \/>\nparamount,\u201d He added<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;\">\n<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">By Rose Achiego, Waumini<br \/>\nCommunications KCCB<\/i><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rev.
