The
\nCatholic Church has applauded Kenya\u2019s President Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s decision to
\nreject proposed religious societies rules 2015 that were intended to regulate
\nchurches.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nrules attracted widespread condemnation for infringing on Kenya\u2019s constitution.
\nIn a statement sent to media houses on 28th, January, 2016, President Uhuru
\nKenyatta rejected the proposals and directed that a new process driven by
\nreligious stakeholders with the participation of the government and the general
\npublic to take place.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Religious Societies Rules published by the Attorney
\nGeneral\u2018s Office require that all religious organizations submit their
\nconstitution showing statement of their doctrine of faith. <\/div>\n
\nAny religious society in Kenya must have its constitution
\nwith programmes, ministries, charitable activities and education activities
\nundertaken by the religious society and details of persons coordinating these
\nactivities. According to the new rules, all religious societies must be
\nregistered and open to the registrar’s inspection any time. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThey also demand that all pastors in Kenya must hold a
\ntheological certificate from an accredited theological institution. The new
\nrules was set to be gazetted at the end of January, and was expected to be
\noperational after a year. <\/div>\n
\nIn an interview<\/i> with Waumini News<\/i>, Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) General
\nSecretary, Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Rono said that President Kenyatta\u2019s decision to
\nwithdraw the proposed rules was reached after a successful consultative
\ndeliberation between religious leaders and the government.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWhile
\nacknowledging the government\u2019s concern about misuse of the freedom to worship
\nby fraudulent religious leaders who extort money from worshipers and radicalize
\nthe youth, Father Rono said religious leaders were keen to adopt
\nself-regulation.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nreligious leaders drawn from Muslim, Hindu, National Council of Churches of
\nKenya (NCCK), KCCB and evangelical Churches resolved to convene series of
\nmeetings to discuss the matter further and give way forward to the government.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPresident
\nKenyatta said that he expected the outcome to be a development of firm and fair
\nregulations that uphold the sacrosanct principles of religious freedom that
\nunderpin the democratic ideals as guaranteed by the Kenyan constitution.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe
\ngovernment remains committed to an open, transparent and accessible government
\nwhere public participation and consideration of a broad range of views is
\nparamount,\u201d He added<\/div>\n
