\nThe Catholic Commission for
\nJustice and Peace (CCJP), a social development arm of the Episcopal Conference
\nof Malawi (ECM), has expressed worry over the continued food and drug shortage
\nin the country; a situation which the Commission says puts lives of Malawians
\nat risk.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nCCJP Acting National Secretary,
\nMartin Chiphwanya has since challenged the Government and other concerned
\npartners to ensure that the right to food and essential health services is guaranteed
\nto every Malawian citizen by making sure that maize is available in
\nAgricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) deports and that
\nadequate drug supply is also available in all public hospitals.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMartin notes that although drugs
\ncould be available in hospitals, in most cases they are stolen and as a result
\npoor people do not have access to medicine.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cPeople are dying to
\ndiseases that can easily be cured. Poor people are also feeling the pinch as
\nthey don\u2019t have the financial muscle to buy the medicine from Pharmacies,\u201d he said
\nadding that \u201cit is worrisome to note that in other cases, more especially in
\nthe villages, people are buying medicines in uncertified shops and pharmacies which
\nis a big threat to their right to life\u201d.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMartin observed that so far
\nthere seem no any punitive measures given to those caught in the act of
\nstealing medicine from public hospitals and in an event that culprits are
\ncaught, not heavy punishment is given to them as the society expects.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cCCJP believes that life is
\nvery sacred and all efforts should be taken to make sure that people\u2019s lives
\nare not put at any risk,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOn food shortage situation,
\nCCJP calls upon government to take necessary measures to make sure that maize
\nis readily available in all Admarc deports and that those who connive with
\nAdmarc deport officials should be brought to book.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe urge the Police and
\nsectors involved to perform their role by ensuring that there is safety for
\nMalawians who go to Admarc deports to buy maize and that those vendors that buy
\nmaize dubiously should be arrested,\u201d said Chiphwanya.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe also challenged
\npoliticians who are taking advantage of the scarcity of maize to stop conniving
\nwith Admarc officials and buy maize dubiously with the selfish minds to achieve
\ntheir political ambitions by donating in various fora including hospitals and
\npolitical meetings.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cFor instance,
\nin Chikwawa we have received reports that people are queuing up at Admarc
\ndepots for long hours, some even spending nights in order to buy maize. They
\nare being allowed to purchase 20 kilograms per person. Currently at local
\nmarkets a bag of 50kgs is selling at K13, 000 which is not affordable by many
\npoor people,\u201d noted Chiphwanya.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMeanwhile, President Peter
\nMutharika in his state of national address on Wednesday 3rd February
\nordered the Police to track down and arrest all criminal maize vendors who
\nconnive with crooked Admarc officials to purchase subsidized maize at night and
\nresell it to poor citizens at exorbitant prices.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nCatholic Development
\nCommission in Malawi (Cadecom), a relief and development arm of ECM is
\ncurrently distributing relief food to hunger affected households in some parts
\nof the country as part of World Food Program.<\/div>\n
