Graduate youths in Malawi have been encouraged to apply for the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme as a means to acquire practical skills while seeking permanent employment.
During an educational visit to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malawi country office by Political Science Students at Catholic University of Malawi, James Lihoma the President of Political Science Association, urged his fellow youths in the country to take advantage of opportunities like the UNV programme, which can help them gain valuable professional experience.
“Many young people believe that international organizations such as the UNDP are out of reach for opportunities, but after this visit, I can assure my peers who are still looking for jobs that they should consider applying for these programmes,” said Lihoma.
Chimwemwe Kandodo, Head of the Political Science Department at the Catholic university, echoed Lihoma’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of gaining practical skills.
She then commended UNDP Malawi for providing opportunities to students at the Catholic University of Malawi, stating that the visit opened their eyes to the workings of UNDP in the country.
“Not only did we learn how UNDP functions in Malawi, but we also look forward to fruitful collaborations that can enhance the development of Political Science in our institution,” said Kandodo.
During the visit, Chido Chipudhra, the UNV Programme Coordinator in Malawi, guided students on how to search for careers and opportunities at UNDP using the online portal.
The visit also allowed students to gain insights into UNDP’s work in governance, resilience, and sustainable growth. The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is an initiative by the United Nations that promotes peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
The programme aims to mobilize UN Volunteers for the United Nations and advocate for the recognition of volunteers as essential contributors to accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
