The Archbishop of Kasama who is also President of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops, Most Rev. Ignatius Chama, has called on Catholic Christians to remain grounded in Catholic Social Teaching as the country engages in heated debates over proposed constitutional amendments.
Speaking during his weekly radio program on Wednesday, on Lutanda Radio, Archbishop Chama noted that just like in 1995, 1996, 2019, and 2020, every attempt to amend the Constitution has been marked by controversy and divisive discourses that often disrespect differing opinions.
Using the amendment of the Constitution as an example, he urged the faithful to understand and apply the Catholic Social Teaching when navigating such national issues, emphasizing that the Church offers clear moral guidance on how to approach constitutional matters.
“The Constitution belongs to every citizen and should benefit all,” he said. “When people are not listened to, the amendment should not proceed unless someone wants to dictate the process.”
The Archbishop further encouraged Catholics not to wait for bishops or priests to speak on such matters but to draw from the ecclesiastical guidance already provided by the Church.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Chama also announced that he will preside over the Chrism Mass and the blessing of oils in the Archdiocese of Kasama. During the ceremony, priests from all four congregations serving in the Archdiocese will renew their commitment to their priestly service to Christ and the people of God.
