The Catholic Bishop of Mpika Diocese Rt. Rev Edwin Mulandu has urged Catholics to embrace Lent for renewal, repentance, and reconciliation, stressing a return to spiritual values amid rising secularism.

In his Lenten message, Bishop Mulandu reflected on the theme of the Jubilee Year, Pilgrims of Hope, and urged Catholics to embrace prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as they journey toward Easter.

“This season is a time of grace and transformation, calling us to reflect deeply on our faith, repent from sin, and renew our commitment to the Gospel,” he said.

Bishop Mulandu expressed concern over the increasing influence of secularism, which he said is eroding core Christian values such as compassion, forgiveness, and love.

He warned that many people are prioritizing worldly matters over spiritual growth, leading to selfishness and a decline in communal solidarity.

Rt. Rev. Mulandu also raised concerns over growing disrespect for the Church and its clergy, pointing out instances where political figures have attempted to undermine the role of priests and bishops in society.

Bishop Mulandu urged Catholics to use the Lenten season to deepen their relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

“Even the smallest act of kindness can make a significant difference,” he said, reminding the faithful that God’s love is best reflected in acts of charity.

Bishop Mulandu has since reminded all Catholics that Lent is not just about personal transformation but also about rebuilding the Church and the nation while cultivating the spirit of forgiving one another and working together to reflect Christ’s love in communities.
