UGANDA: Protect Soil on Mountain, Make Good Use of Nature, Says Bishop Kibira

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kasese Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira Kambale has called for proper use of energies and strategic plans by parents for purposes of laying a foundation on which their families will base their future.
Bishop Kibira who thanked God for blessing Kasese with fertile nature, said time was now for family heads to be exemplary and engage in productive work that will secure the future of their families.
In his homily while presiding over Mass at Kibirigha Roman Catholic Church in Ihandiro Sub County where he confirmed over 360 Christians into the Catholic Church, the Bishop who asked Christians to make a good audit of the people they live with to get good friends, asked the community of Ihandiro and other mountainous areas to protect and make good use of nature as means to secure their livelihoods.
He called for protection of the soil and other natural resources as the Holy Father recommended in his letter of Laudato Si, saying soil is the major source of food for all living things. Using the God-given talents and skills, Christians should properly utilize natural resources in fight against poverty and famine.
Bishop Kibira called for hard work and promotion of a saving culture as means to support their families and the Church’s demands, calling it laziness and a sign of irresponsibility for any wife to demands greens and salt from her husband.
Kibira warned the local population against the sugar plantations in valley where soil fertility is being spoiled by the increasing number of sugarcane plantation.
The Makerere University Chancellor, Hon Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, reaffirmed his commitment to assist the locals in conserving soils by making terraces and availing hybrid reeds that will protect the soils and serve animals with pasture.
