This week, the Diocese of Zomba has officially handed over a renovated school block valued at USD 5,793.87 to St. Martin de Porris Mayaka Primary School in Zomba District.

During a blessing ceremony on Wednesday, the Bishop of the Diocese of Zomba, Rt. Rev. Alfred Mateyu Chaima, explained that the previous condition of the school block posed serious risks to both students and teachers, leading to its abandonment.

Bishop Chaima noted that, with support from the Pontifical Missionary Societies (PMS), the diocese was able to rehabilitate the school in order to improve the learning condition and quality of education for its learners.

“Let us keep our donors in our prayers for their generosity, which has made it possible for us to rehabilitate this block and ensure the safety of our children while they receive their education,” said Chaima.

He urged community members to embrace a spirit of self-reliance in tackling common challenges they face.

“Remember to value education by ensuring that every child has the opportunity to attend school. This is essential for building a promising future for our children and for the development of both our country and our church,” added Bishop Chaima.

Local authorities have praised the Catholic Church for its timely intervention in providing an additional school block, which will help accommodate the over 2,400 students enrolled at the school.

St. Martin de Porris Mayaka Primary School is located near the Mayaka Parish and was established shortly after the parish was founded in 1920.
