ZAMBIA: Mansa Cathedral in Zambia Holds a Special Mass for the Sick at the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes

Mansa Diocese
The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary in Mansa Diocese joined the universal Church in praying for the sick on the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. The celebration emphasized care, compassion, and hope for those suffering from illness, in line with the Church’s mission to support the vulnerable.
The special Mass at the Cathedral was presided over by Bishop Patrick Chisanga OFM, Conv. who encouraged the sick to find strength in Christ, the Divine Healer.
In his homily, Bishop Chisanga emphasized the theme of hope and trust in God’s providence, reminding the faithful that Mary’s intercession brings comfort to those in pain.
Referencing Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans chapter 5 verse 5 (“Hope does not disappoint”), he urged the sick not to lose faith but to remain steadfast in God’s love. He also highlighted Christ’s miracles of healing in the Gospels, assuring the congregation that God continues to heal and restore lives today.
The celebration was also a reminder of the Christian call to care for the sick. The faithful, especially members of Small Christian Communities (SCCs), home-based caregivers, and health workers, were encouraged to show love, visit the sick, and offer them spiritual and emotional support.
“To all caregivers, nurses, and health workers your service is not just a profession but a vocation of love,” the celebrant said. “Through your hands, God’s mercy is felt by those who suffer.”
The event concluded with special prayers for the sick and a blessing with the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes. The faithful were urged to continue praying for the sick, visiting those in need, and being bearers of hope in their communities.
The mass was held on the Day for the sick, which falls on 11 February.
