SOUTH SUDAN: Bishop Hiiboro’s Message of Condolence to After the Plane Crush in Binteu

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has extended his condolences to Rt. Rev Christian Carlassare and entire Diocese of Bentiu in South Sudan and all those affected by a devastating plane crash that happened in Bentiu, Unity State, on 29th January 2025, claiming lives of 20 people with only one surviving.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic plane crash in Bentiu, which has claimed the lives of 20 people, including four whom I had the privilege of knowing personally. I extend my heartfelt condolences to you, to the families affected, to the people of Bentiu and to the Greater Pioneer Operational Company. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this incredibly difficult time”.

 “Such a loss is a reminder of the fragility of life and the pain that comes with it,” he stated and continued, “We pray for those who have passed, that they may find eternal peace, and for their families, that they may find strength and comfort in this time of sorrow”.

Bishop Eduardo in his letter also stated that the incident is a stark reminder that ensuring safety in all areas of life is important, stressing that there is need for greater measures to prevent future tragedies.

To honor the memory of the departed, the prelate has announced that they will offer Holy Mass for the souls who have lost their lives as they trust in God’s Mercy.

“We shall gather here to offer Holy Mass for the souls of those who lost their lives in this disaster. We will remember them in prayer, trusting in God’s mercy and love”.

He reminded the grieving families that God is near to the brokenhearted and that His love and Mercy embrace those in mourning.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18”.

According to the Minister of Petroleum Puot Kang Chol the plane was heading to Juba and crashed three minutes after taking off.
