KENYA: Fr. Jackson Murugara of Consolata Missionaries Appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Meru Diocese

The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Jackson Murugara, IMC, as the Coadjutor Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Meru. The bishop-Elect is a member of the Congregation of the Consolata Missionaries.
The news of Fr. Murugara’s appointment was officially published in L’Osservatore Romano in Rome on 16th January 2025 at 12:00 pm Rome time and 2:00 pm Kenyan time.
The appointment of Fr. Murugara was officially communicated to Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) by Archbishop Bert Van Megan the Apostolic Nuncio in Kenya. Until his appointment, Bishop-Elect Murugara served as a priest at Consolata Shrine, Westlands, Nairobi.
A Coadjutor Bishop is a Bishop who learns, practices, and offers support until the resignation or retirement or upon the death of the current bishop.
Bishop-elect Jackson Murugara was born in 1970 in Kamanyaki, Tharaka Nithi County, Meru. His philosophical and Religious formation was from 1993 to 1996 at Consolata Philosophicum, where he graduated with a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies from the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome. His spiritual journey deepened during his novitiate at Sagana (1996-1997), culminating in his first religious vows in 1997.
Between 1997 and 2001, he studied Theology at the Missionary Institute of London, affiliated with Middlesex University and made his final religious profession on 18th November 2000 and his ordination to the diaconate the following day. He was ordained a priest on 15th August 2001 at Matiri Parish in the Diocese of Meru.
Following his ordination, he served in various parishes including Kagaene Parish (October 2001–March 2002), Mujwa Parish (April 2002–October 2002), and Chiga Parish in the Archdiocese of Kisumu (November 2002–July 2003).
From August 2003 to May 2009, he served as a formator for postulants at the Consolata Seminary. Between 2009 and 2011, he pursued further studies, earning a Licentiate in Spirituality from Teresianum University in Rome, graduating with first-class honors. Upon his return to Kenya, he served at Bethany House in Sagana from 2011 to 2018, where he specialized in retreats, Christian formation, and managed a charity home for elderly women.
Upon his appointment he has been serving at Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya.
