Bishop of the Diocese of Chikwawa Rt. Rev. Peter Musikuwa has urged for players for the people and government of Mozambique following the post-election violence in the country.

Speaking to the refugees currently in Nsanje district, Malawi, which is under the Diocese of Chikwawa this week, the prelate said the Catholic faithful in the diocese extend a warm welcome to the people of Mozambique as they seek a temporary stay in Malawi.

“They have also asked me to assure you people that as a Church in Malawi, we will continue praying for you and the government of Mozambique that the post-elections violence currently being experienced in the country should end,” said Bishop Musikuwa.

Since the October 2024 election in Mozambique, the country has been experiencing political violence. Venancio Mondlane, the closest challenger among three other candidates, has challenged the results.

The results showed that Mondlane won with 24 percent of the vote. However, the politician claims he won 53 percent, going by his party’s tally. He further claimed that his party won 138 seats in Parliament, as opposed to the 31 seats initially announced by the National Election Commission (CNE).

The violence has witnessed hundreds of people being killed and people fleeing into neighbouring countries including Malawi.
