ZAMBIA: Catholic Archbishop Warns Against Bribery

Archbishop Benjamin Phiri

The Archbishop of Ndola in Zambia, Most Rev. Benjamin Phiri, has condemned bribery and corruption, describing them as theft and a grave sin.

Addressing congregants during the end-of-year Mass for the Ndola Archdiocese Curia team at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Archbishop Phiri decried the growing culture of exploitation in public offices.

“The attitude among workers in public service bothers me. Each one given a job to serve the people becomes like a small god and exploiting each other has become normal,” he said.

He noted that many public officers demand bribes for services they are already paid to deliver, calling such practices dishonest and sinful.

“You go to an office, and if you want to be served quickly, you must pay the officer. This is theft and it’s displeasing before God,” he said.

Archbishop Phiri urged workers in public and church institutions to uphold honesty, dedication, and integrity in their service.

“If we are honest and committed, we will not only sustain ourselves but also earn credit in Heaven,” he concluded.
