ZAMBIA: Archbishop of Lusaka Urges Clergy to Serve Out of Love, Not for Recognition

The Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev. Alick Banda, has priests to serve not for personal recognition but out of deep love and commitment to God’s call.
Speaking during the funeral Mass at St. Ignatius Parish in Lusaka, where hundreds gathered to mourn the late Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) Director in Zambia, Fr. Alexander Muyebe SJ, Archbishop Banda delivered a heartfelt homily during which he described Fr. Muyebe as a humble and dedicated servant of God and a champion of social justice.
“Our life is not our own; we belong to God and serve not because of a desire for recognition but out of love,” said Archbishop Banda, “Jesus invites us to serve with fidelity, and Fr. Muyebe answered that call fully and faithfully.”
Reflecting on the sense of loss, Archbishop Banda acknowledged the sorrow felt by many while emphasizing that Fr. Muyebe’s influence endures.
“Though we may lose him physically, his work and spirit continue to live among us,” he said.
Under Fr. Muyebe’s leadership, JCTR remained a beacon for social justice, addressing critical issues affecting Zambia’s marginalized communities.
Fr. Muyebe, who passed away on November 8 in Siavonga after a short illness, was laid to rest on November 12, 2024, in Kasisi, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who strive for justice, compassion, and faithfulness.
