MALAWI: On Mission Sunday Christians Urged to be Role Models in Evangelization
By Susan Moyo
The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, Rt. Rev. Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda has urged Christians to take a leading role in the missionary work of evangelization.
He made the remarks on Sunday 20th October 2024 during the World Mission Sunday celebration at Holy Cross Parish in Nkhamenya, Kasungu District.
Bishop Nyirenda emphasized, “As Christians, we are teachers and must proclaim the Gospel in words and actions, making ourselves the light to the world whether at home, church, or workplace.
There are many social issues happening around us like theft and this signifies that people have not received the words of God, so it is up to us Christians to turn the situation around”, he explained.
He also stressed the importance of fundraising for missionary work.
“We are in the right direction as a Diocese in promoting missionary work,” The Bishop said citing examples of parishioners who are building churches without relying heavily on donors, but urged that “more needs to be done to continue the work of evangelization.”
He further encouraged Christians to pray for vocations saying, “We need to pray and help the youth answer the call to serve as priests or sisters because opening more parishes requires these servants”, he said.
On his part Fr. Thomas Gondwe, the director for Pontifical Missionary Societies (PMS) in Mzuzu Diocese expressed gratitude to Christians for their generous contributions despite economic challenges.
“We are passing through a difficult time, people are starving of hunger, and the economy is not good for many so we appreciate whoever has managed to contribute a little towards the missionary work”, he said.
Since the launch of Mission Month on September 29, 2024, the PMS office has been offering lessons to local leaders on Mission Month objectives and Christians responsibilities.
Mission Sunday is a special day that unites Catholics worldwide in prayer, solidarity, and support for the Church.
