MALAWI: Catholic University Law Students Urge Professionalism among Medical Staff
By Luke Bisani
Law students from the Catholic University of Malawi have urged professionalism among medical staff by ensuring their adherence to the country’s laws.
Speaking at a legal clinic held at St Joseph College Health Science in Nguludi, Chiradzulu district, on Wednesday this week, the Head of Legal Practical Studies at the Catholic University of Malawi, Tamandani Kadyampakeni, expressed the need for medical staff to adhere to professionalism by following the law stipulated in the country’s constitution.
“It is important for medical staff to know better the side of the law when they are dealing with patients in our hospitals, and health facilities across the country,” said Kadyampakeni
He added that negligence of the law affects professionalism, urging the medical personnel to be conversant with what the law says.
“Due to the nature of their work, any slight mistake can lead to loss of life, any body part and we have seen people sueing medical officers, and hospitals just because in one way or the other our laws were not followed” added Kadyampakeni.
Acting Principal of St. Joseph College of Health Sciences Uzehlaphi Phoya commended the university for holding the legal clinic at the college saying students had proper guidance on what the law says when they are in line of duty.
“Of course, our students do have a course on ethics but today was a special interaction because our students had an opportunity to ask questions of the people who are studying the law,” said Phoya.
During the legal clinic, students from St Joseph College Health Science had an interaction session with fourth-year law students and their lecturers.
The Catholic University of Malawi is the first private university that offers an accredited law programme without conditions in Malawi.
