The Prelate of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Rt. Rev. Alfred Chaima has urged Christians in the country to continue praying and supporting the country’s oldest minor seminary, Child Jesus that is popularly known as Nankhunda.

Speaking during the commemoration of 100 years of existence of the seminary on Saturday, October 19, 2024, Bishop Chaima said the seminary needs prayers and support for it to continue striving in supporting young men as they take their priesthood path.

“This has been God manifesting his love for his people and we can only come back to him in humility and thank him. Let’s take this opportunity to ask for your continued prayer for the Seminary and resources so that the seminary continues to serve the Church and society by providing a conducive environment for learning and formation,” said Bishop Chaima.

He added that the Seminary needs serious renovations and additional structures to cater for the current learners.

Established by Montfort Fathers in 1924 Child Jesus Seminary serves as the first Seminary in Malawi.

The Seminary has made a significant contribution to the growth of the Church and Nation through its productive alumni who are serving in different high roles in the country and beyond.  Among the people who walked the corridors and received formation at this Seminary are late Archbishop James Chiona, the late Bishop Felix Mkhori and the late Bishop Matthias Chimole.

Child Jesus Minor Seminary also gave formation to Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera, Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa and Archbishop George Desmond Tambala.

On record, the seminary has also helped hundreds of priests and lay people that are serving the Church and private sectors occupying various influential positions.

Currently, the seminary has 240 learners who are enjoying studies and formation at the foot of the Zomba mountain where it is located.
