The Catholic Diocese of Mpika has confirmed an altercation that occurred at its diocesan offices on Sunday, August 25th, 2024, in front of the main gate, involving an invasion of private property and harassment of their security guard.
Bishop Mulandu Bishop of Mpika, Rt. Rev. Edwin Mulandu has confirmed the incident, saying the incident happened between 17:00 and 18:00 hours when a group of young men dressed in red regalia, suspected to be affiliates of a major political party, forcefully entered the diocesan premises.
According to the security guard on duty, these individuals broke through the gate, removed him from his post, and took over the task of managing vehicle access to the property with the intent to disrupt a political program scheduled to air on Yusufu Radio, featuring Citizens First party President, Mr. Harry Kalaba.
Bishop Mulandu noted that the behavior of these individuals caused significant distress and disruption not only to the diocese’s security personnel, but also to the overall safety and security of the property particularly the Yusufu Radio station.
He added that despite the guard’s attempts to manage the situation calmly and professionally, the intruders continued to act aggressively, threatening staff members and residents at the property with offensive weapons.
Rt. Rev. Mulandu has since disclosed that the Diocese has officially lodged a complaint with the police in Mpika, calling for an investigation and appropriate action against those involved.
The diocese emphasized the importance of managing such incidents to prevent future occurrences and to ensure the safety and security of their premises and occupants.
“Mpika has always been known for its peaceful and secure environment. We urge all residents of Mpika, especially our youths, to reject violence and resist being exploited by individuals with political agendas,” stated Rt. Rev. Mulandu.
The Bishop has further reaffirmed the non-partisan stance of the Catholic Church in Zambia, highlighting that the Catholic Diocese of Mpika remains committed to this core principle.
The diocese calls upon all Catholics who have been offended to remain calm and allow the police to do their work, entrusting their prayers and needs to the intercession of St. Joseph the Worker, the chaste spouse of Mary, Mother of the Apostles.
