ZAMBIA: Joins in Celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
By Sandra Kunda
Catholics in Zambia yesterday joined the rest of the church across the world to commemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This feast marks the departure of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, from Earth, where her soul and body were taken to God’s presence.
The Assumption feast is a Holy Day of Obligation for both Roman and Eastern-rite Catholics, requiring attendance at Mass or Divine Liturgy.
In Ndola Archdiocese, the feast, at the Holy Cross Masala Parish, was graced with a beautiful and spiritually uplifting Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD.
In his homily, Archbishop Phiri encouraged all present to grow closer to the Blessed Mother through the frequent recitation of the Rosary.
He emphasised the power of Mary’s intercession, especially at the time of death, and urged the faithful to repent and sincerely convert from worldly ways.
And in Lusaka, at the Marian Shrine, Archbishop Alick Banda called on Christians to continue being faithful even when the burden seems too heavy while imitating Mary our Mother, who bore the burden of seeing the suffering of her Son.
And Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) Secretariat also took part in celebrating the feast with Fr. Francis Mukosa, the Secretary General reminding Christians that the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary speaks the power of God over death and is a reminder that as pilgrims we shall die one day.
Other Dioceses also joined in celebrating this feast, with masses held in various parts of the country.
