The Annual Education Review Meeting for Meki Catholic Vicariate schools took place July 31-August 3 at the St. John XXIII Center in Bishan Guracha. Over 50 participants, including principals and academic directors, gathered to discuss the future of Catholic education.

A gathering of educators convened by the Meki branch of the Ethiopian Catholic Church’s Social and Development Commission focused on elevating educational standards. Participants delved into academic performance, exchanged successful teaching practices, and pinpointed areas for growth based on presentations from eight exemplary schools.

Central to the discussions was the integration of Catholic Social Teaching. A comprehensive overview of the seven core principles, from human dignity to environmental stewardship, underscored the importance of holistic student development. The aim was to cultivate not only academic achievement but also compassionate and responsible citizens.

A new inspection framework was implemented, focusing on student achievement, safeguarding, and resource management. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance education quality across vicariate schools. The meeting highlighted the importance of safeguarding students, and reviewing safeguarding policies to ensure adherence to the seven minimum standards. Educational policies were also updated and aligned to guarantee consistency. This included developing new school standards, revising the teachers’ code of conduct, and creating handbooks for students and parents. To improve school oversight, effective supervision strategies were discussed, including a pilot inspection manual for two schools.

The meeting concluded with an awards ceremony honoring seven schools for their exceptional accomplishments. These schools were recognized for outstanding academic performance, particularly in the Grade Eight and Twelve exams, as well as exemplary student behavior and significant infrastructure improvements. The awards celebrated the schools’ commitment to academic excellence, character development, and creating optimal learning environments.

The ceremony also celebrated schools demonstrating exceptional commitment to inclusive education, especially for students with disabilities like visual impairments. By honoring these schools, it emphasized the importance of providing quality education and support to all students. These awards inspire schools across the vicariate to aim for excellence in every aspect of education. This event showcased the collective dedication of Meki’s schools to creating inclusive learning environments that nurture students’ overall development.

The annual review meeting for Meki Catholic Vicariate schools concluded with a renewed focus on improving student outcomes. Participants developed actionable plans to achieve a shared vision of holistic student development. Armed with faith, academic excellence, and a commitment to social justice, these schools are prepared to excel in the coming year. The meeting emphasized collaboration and a dedication to the common good, laying the groundwork for a successful academic year.
