ZAMBIA: Zambia Needs a Listening Government, Cleric Laments on Matters Affecting the Country
By Sandra Kunda
A cleric from a landlocked country in south-central Africa has raised concern about a government that does not listen to the situations of the people in the country.
“Listening is the first part of development, and if the Government is not listening, it means we are very far from development,” Fr. Chewe Mukosa from Ndola Archdiocese pointed out stressing the art of listening
He continued, “We need to sit down at a round table and talk about all these things, but at the moment, we are suffering from a lack of a listening Government. Zambia needs a listening government that is not reactive at every point to tackle these issues. Our government should listen to the people.”
While addressing the various challenges affecting the nation Fr. Mukosa cited the high cost of living, load shedding, unemployment, and the rising number of children living on the streets.
The Zambian cleric stated that many things have currently gone wrong in the country including high prices of commodities that people cannot afford, a situation which leads to increased poverty.
“Today, we also have high levels of load shedding. I am not blaming it on anyone, but this is a reality which we need to sit down and talk about,” he continued. Fr. Mukosa advised the Government against being reactive.
The current social and economic challenges being faced by Zambia have attracted reactions from various stakeholders, including the church.
