Pope Francis has emphasized the need for “building bridges, strengthening faith, unity, and service” among the Bishops of Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In his message delivered by the President of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) Most. Rev George Tambala, the holy Father encouraged the bishops to work together to create a sustainable society that addresses social, economic, and environmental issues.
The Consultative Meeting, which builds on the 2020 Lusaka Conference, aimed to enhance pastoral unity, spread the Gospel, and strengthen solidarity in the face of shared challenges.
During the meeting that ECM hosted, the President of Malawi Dr. Lazarus Chakwera urged the Bishops to maintain a good relationship with the State and continue their work on integrity, ethical standards, and professionalism.
He thanked the neighboring countries for supporting Malawi during crises.
On his part, the Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia Archbishop Gian Luca Perici also encouraged the Bishops to provide spiritual support, calling for a unified commitment to bringing joy to the people and for them to consecrate the region to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Archbishop Tambala, urged the Church leaders to protect their people from challenges like secularism, family breakdowns, poverty, and environmental degradation, emphasizing their role as shepherds of the community.
During the conference, the Bishops underscored the importance of robust priesthood formation, self-reliance of churches, catechesis, and environmental care among others.
The Bishops have since resolved that the association be named The Association of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe ACBC-MAZAZI which will have its secretariat in Zambia.
The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe in three years.
