ETHIOPIA: The Ethiopian Catholic Church Welcomes New Bishop for Vicariate of Soddo

The Holy Father has appointed a new shepherd for the Vicariate of Soddo Reverend Fr. Dejene Hidoto Gamo, a member of the Order of Franciscan Minor Capuchin (O.F.M. Cap)

Born in Sibaye, Soddo, on 21 March 1972, Fr. Gamo returns to his roots to lead the Vicariate. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Public Ethics. He has also held several leadership positions within the Capuchin family and actively served the Soddo community.

Monsignor Dejene took his perpetual vows in 1998 and, after completing his studies and formation at the Saint Francis Capuchin Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Addis Ababa, was ordained a priest on 9 July 2000 in Addis Ababa.

The Bishop-elect has served in various capacities within the Church, including Provincial Vicar of Kidane Meheret for the Capuchin Friars of Ethiopia, Guardian of the Fraternity of Konto, Director of the Abba Pascal Technical and Vocational Training Institute, and Pastoral Coordinator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Soddo.

Msgr. Dejene’s appointment follows the resignation of Bishop Tsegaye. Since then, Bishop Seyoum Franso Noel of Hosanna has been overseeing the Vicariate during this transition.
