Archbishop Ignatius Chama

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has expressed displeasure at the dishonorable conduct of state police toward Bishop Clement Mulenga of Kabwe Diocese and the former Head of State Edgar Lungu.

On May 17th 2024, State Police stormed the office of the Bishop of Kabwe Diocese when the former Head of State paid a courtesy call to him.

Reacting to this incident, ZCCB president Archbishop of Kasama Most Rev. Ignatius Chama says that while the government has apologized to the Church and not to the former Head of State, the act was a completely unwarranted invasion of the bishop’s privacy and cannot be justified.

Archbishop Chama states that it is sad that the former Head of State is being monitored by the Police and treated like an enemy.

His Grace says the government should not use the mistakes that were made by former president Edgar Lungu during his regime to give him harsh treatment as this will not be different from the mistakes he made that led him to lose power.

He adds that the government and the State Police should work on respecting the rights of every citizen, including those of the former head of state.

Archbishop Chama has since called on every well-meaning Zambian to promote unity as opposed to bringing division. He was speaking at his weekly program on Radio Lutanda, “Ishiwi Lyakwa Kachema” on Wednesday 22dn May 2024.
