Rt. Rev. Raphael Mweempwa

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Monze Rt. Rev. Raphael Mweempwa has declared St. Augustine in Mazabuka District in Southern Province in Zambia a Parish.

In his decree, the Bishop cited the Canon Law and said that it was time for the community of St. Augustine to be declared a Parish.

The decree was read on 12th May 2024, during the celebration of Mass at St Augustine in Mazabuka.

The church was founded by the late Bishop Moses Hamungole in 2018 as a sub-parish, born from Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Mazabuka. Then, the parishioners were congregating from Mazabuka Girls Secondary School hall.

The Parish has ten outstations: Chisoba, Chikankata, Bakhita, Mulawo, Kangila, Zingu, Ngangula, Hapwaya, Upper Kaleya, and Kazoka Center.

And Bishop Mweempwa said it was high time the quasi-parish was canonically declared as a Parish and stood on its own.

He urged all the faithful to continue nurturing the Church and to continue working together as one big community.

The Code of Canon Law, Can. 555 §2, empowers the Bishop to declare a Quasi Parish into a fully recognized Parish. This legal provision was invoked by Bishop Mweempwa in the declaration of St. Augustine as a Parish.
