On May 3, 2024, the clergy and the faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba joined Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera in celebrating his 96th birthday at his retirement house at Thondwe Pastoral Centre.

Speaking during the birthday dinner, Bishop Chamgwera urged the clergy and Religious in the diocese to live in unity as they work towards the evangelization.

Bishop Chamgwera explained that unity helps in achieving the primary purpose of reaching out to many people with the Gospel.

“I urged you to consider yourselves as part of a larger force and a member of a unit towards the mission,” said Chamgwera.

He further thanked God for the many blessings and graces bestowed on him over the years he has served in His vineyard.

Born on April 30, 1928, Bishop Allan Chamgwera served the Diocese of Zomba from 1981 to 2004. Currently, Bishop Chamgwera is the only surviving co-author of the controversial Pastoral Letter of 1992 entitled Living Our Faith, that changed the political landscape of Malawi.

In 2022, the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) awarded Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera for his role in issuing the letter in 1992.
