Catholic Diocese of Ndola Director of Social Programmes Fr. Bernard Kapembwa has urged the faithful to get involved in disaster prevention management and mitigation efforts of the Church amid the recent drought.
Fr. Kapembwa this week attended Caritas Zambia convened training in Lusaka on Community Led Disaster Risk Reduction for all 11 Dioceses.
He said through Caritas, the disaster management units of the Church want to scale up efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change that has resulted in droughts.
Fr Kapembwa noted that the drought will have negative consequences on the hunger situation and on availability of water.
“As you know all Dioceses have disaster management units which are fruits of justice and peace. These committees look out for disaster risks, actual disasters and look at ways of managing disasters. Everyone is called upon to see how best we can mitigate the impact of climate change,” he said.
Fr. Kapembwa says the Diocese has already started putting up measures to tackle climate change such as tree planting with over 3,500 trees planted in the recent months in various parts of the diocese to mitigate the impact of climate change.
The Government has declared the prolonged dry spells in the country as a National Disaster and Emergency.
