Bishop Benjamin Phiri of the Catholic Diocese of Ndola in Zambia has urged law enforcement officers, to uphold honesty and love in their service to the community.
Expressing concern over instances where some officers tarnish the reputation of law enforcement agencies through misconduct, Bishop Phiri emphasized the importance of focusing on crime prevention rather than simply catching citizens off guard.
Speaking during a recent homily at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola, Bishop Phiri stressed that the presence of police in communities should not instill fear in citizens.
He called upon officers to fulfill their duty with integrity and compassion, reminding them of the significant responsibility they hold in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.
Bishop Phiri highlighted the need for accountability within law enforcement, suggesting that those who abuse their authority should be held to account, further emphasizing the need for officers to inspire trust and confidence, rather than intimidation and exploitation.
“You cannot be in uniform and do wrong things. I should feel safe when I come to you or when I find you. I should not be afraid because now you are going to ask me for this and that. Unless you pay this you are going to be this. No,” he outlined.
Additionally, Bishop Phiri addressed road safety, emphasizing the importance of visible policing as a deterrent to traffic violations while encouraging officers to prioritize prevention over punishment.
In the same sermon, Bishop Phiri also called upon the media to uphold professionalism and ethics in their reporting, recognizing their influential role in shaping public perceptions and attitudes.
Bishop Phiri’s message underscores the importance of integrity, accountability, and compassion in both law enforcement and media professions, advocating for a society where justice is pursued with fairness and dignity.
